Good folks: Do any of you still have a traditional ballcock in your toilet system?

Ok, so Fill valves are more sleek looking, modern and indeed, economically sound but Ballcocks…..how deliciously lewd sounding they are eh?

Anyway….do I win the crass thread of the day accolade now?

When my loo flushes a sound runs through the plumbing like a 50 ton ship grating down the pier ..... if I open the cold tap a little it stops. I don't think its air.

A fill valve looks a little like something that one might see in a tropical fish tank.

Well…..sort of.

Hmmmm…noisy plumbing Granny?

It could be a result of the settings of the pipes (hitting against something whenever water flows through them)?

Any Plumbers present here to help with better advice please?

It could be air, water hammer I think it's called

Try opening all the taps in the house and flushing the toilet a few times, worked for me

Fear not; as a rule, if you have a push button toilet it’s going to be a full valve as opposed to the older handle flush designs which invariably comprised a ballcock valve in the cistern

Usually have to deal with these crusty relics up in lofts where they hide in nasty dirty black wet boxes

The new types suffer from crusty rings though especially in hard water areas. However, if you know what you’re doing and careful, a quick wipe around the ring with a finger will stop them passing water
