Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Had mine put in under general anaesthetic at hospital but not yet ready to have it taken out. Heard it was unpleasant, but if it is an issue I will discuss it with GP and ask if they do it under general as I have had loads of gynae issues in the past.

I have had coils all my life, and have only encountered some slight discomfort whenever I needed to have one put in or taken out.

For me, the worst part is for the speculum to go into the vagina in order to open up the cervix.

Why has he told you it needs to come out? It's recommended it's changed every 5 years but only because that's how long the hormones last. The coil itself will protect you from pregnancy, even if the progesterone has worn off.

It can hurt quite a bit but some here have said it wasn't so bad. You certainly don't need a GA just for that.

If you decide to have it removed, have you considered what else you are going to do for contraception? Your GP can put another straight back in if you want.

Im on my fourth, first one hurt going in but they have got better last one was just uncomfortable, they recommend taking a couple of painkillers beforehand

i have been diagnosed with pcos, i have lots of scarring from Endometriosis and dr thinks that the coil isnt helping as much as a pill could.....just rip the bloody lot out

I am on my third one.

first one was slightly painfull, 2nd was a bit of a dull ache, but third one had me crawling on the ceiling!

I dont know what they did differently, but the first two were done at the FPC, where as the most recent was done by the nurse at my GPs surgery.

I know where i will be going back next time.

It helps if it's timed with your menstrual cycle. At one point your cervix opens slightly. I'm not sure when in the cycle that is but if you can work it out and have the appointment then it will help.

Avoid when you're actually on a bleed as you're more pain sensitive then (basically you have a male pain threshold then! ).

Also take some painkillers an hour before the appointment. You can take cocodamol and ibuprofen together - just remember cocodamol has paracetamol in. It has got a whammy when you take that but you will have more confidence and be able to relax more during.

And as long as it's done by someone with plenty of practice (so consider the family planning clinic instead of your GP) it's a short-lived discomfort.

30 odd years ago it really hurt going in and coming out. Made me feel really faint. They used to recommend going when you had a period back then.

well i had my period last week, even though i dont usually..barely bled for past 4 years....

the gp i see has assured me that shes well versed and done it hundreds of times.....will have some ibuprofen....anything with 2co" makes me vom.....

reading this back....im such a wimp...how the f did i have babies and a flipping coil has me awake at night.....
