The Head of Northern British Rail has had to apologise because one of the train staff petted a guide dog on a trip to Leeds which was once a small market town. The dog had a sign around its neck clearly saying do not pet and the clumbsy conductor ignored the sign claiming the dog was not working because he was lying down. Tom does not pet dogs because any dog can bite and especially if fed a meat diet. Once they taste the smell of blood then they are more likely to bite. But the lady who owns the guide dog says that people often ignore the notice. Why can't they be petted by people braver than Tom. What's going on here It's all over the news

This one time I was in a pub and a few of the patrons came in with dogs. Then a working dog came in and sat alone just watching the other dogs making new friends and frolicking. The dog looked so sad. I actually cried, but I had been drinking alone in a pub.

I guess it’s because they’re on duty whilst outside the home of their owner. They have to keep all their senses tip top ready for action.

If some bozo comes up and starts sweet talking the pooch and petting it, it might get distracted and forget about “minding that gap” and all hell would break loose.

I mean folk don’t go up to sheep dogs when they’re in the middle of working, telling Larry the Lamb to “get back” otherwise the sheep would run amok. The farmer would get angry!

We don’t want sheep running amok and we don’t want blind people having accidents.

You can undo years of training by petting a guide dog or an assistance dog.

They have a specific job to do once they are on lead and have been trained to know the difference between lead time and playtime.

Treating them like a pet when they are working confuses them but it's equally disrespectful to their owner and the degree of training.

In the dunes at Studlands i regularly see piles of burnt or charred wood, this is a high fire risk area and the fire brigade regularly attend the dunes, also people smoking and chucking their lit cigarette butts into the heather, people with no thought process exist everywhere, if the dog was lying on the floor maybe the sign was hidden

Tom leant down to stroke the dog and the bugger bit him.

Though also why do people want to go up and pet other peoples dogs?

Not every dog wants petted.

You could be approaching a anxious/rescue/old dog.

Do you go up and say hi to every person you see and touch them?

Amount of times I'm out with my dog and people try and touch and I have to say no and block is ridiculous.

If you want to pet a dog always ask the owner first.

Guide dogs have a job though and I thought everyone knew to respect all the years of training that goes into that!!!

More dogs tend to bite through finding itself in a stressful situation, it may bite to defend itself or its territory. Dogs can bite because they are scared or have been startled. They can bite because they feel threatened. They can bite to protect something.

I work and if I am ever appreciated in any way I become totally distracted and have often neglected to inform my owner of obvious trip hazards and gaps!
