This group are heavily involved in giving food parcels to the poor and they predict a big rise this winter to over a million parcels being distributed. This on the back of food bank donations dropping because of the Costco living crisis. Tom noticed Morissons which is a northern chain selling food items wrapped in plain paper which then are then put in the bank. Why are here so many people in need in 2023.

A combination of government mismanagement and the one everyone seems to forget, we printed billions and paid everyone to sit on their arse for the better part of 2 years

It’s definitely increasing, the numbers in need of help from food banks. Many of the supermarkets have collection points by their checkouts for local food banks or you can donate to them online too. Ours also collects winter coats, gloves and scarves to give out in the colder months.

It’s going to get worse over winter due to the energy costs. The government needs to do more, as basic UC and those on low incomes, it’s not covering the basics. I doubt they will though, so the gap between the rich and the poor keeps widening.

... Relativity ? Comparison ? There have always been people in need. Only friends and neighbours helped when I was younger - not the gvt - not the world.

That doesn't make anything wrong or right just different.

What I see as different is that NEEDS seem to have changed. What were WANTS years ago now seem to be needs.

Above shelter , warmth, food , love and clean air there is not much else someone needs.

Society seems to have created 'needs' No one can live without a phone. Doctors are disappearing. Hospitals are MILES away. Whole estates exist without schools or shops or transport and the one which gets me the most is people don't even seem to know what FOOD is .. people eat shite and don't cook to the extent that there are books and programmes telling people how to cook ffs which was a basic skill for all years ago ...... AND those that can cook don't have scoobies what nutrition or balance is... A LOT of people don't know how to manage money AND there are those that just can't get their hands on money because of temporary short term contracts.

The dispensable fodder is deep and wide in the 2020's

A few things annoy me about the supermarket food bank donations.

1. they sell us the items to donate at gull price, not cost, so they are profiting anyway.

2. I see the basket sitting half full for what seems like weeks at a time, with the 3xact same items inside.

3. If they care about people (they dont they care about profit) why not donate directly?

I find it hard to believe all those donation's actually go anywhere.

Would love to see proof of it helping anyone.

Foodbank usage was through the roof before Covid and the UK's economic recovery from lockdown is one of the worst of the major economies. The answer to 'Why?' both of those are the case is 'Tories'.

If you know where your local food bank is or do an internet search, you could then visit it and have a quick tour, and ask where their donations come from.

I have a voucher book for the trussell trust and give them out to those in need even those in work.

Wages have been allowed to fall behind inflation, cuts to services that support people, the tools to help said people cut, all in the tories watch.

There has always been a support service but now so many are in need it has become noticeable, it can't be hidden anymore.

We are living in a modern Victorian Britian, and I await HOM's to be renamed work houses.

I agree totally with most of these points.

I was at a friend's house the other day,and she was feeding her daughters friend as the friend didn't have food at home. While the kid was chatting away, he was saying him and his siblings just got new iPads. Beyond belief that the parents put tech ahead of feeding their children.

I'm not one to talk about the 'good old days', as usually its through rose tinted glasses. But when you look at additional monthly expense you wouldn't have back in even the 90s its crazy. SKY TV, internet, mobile phone, Spotify, Netflix etc etc.

I've voted Tory the last few times, as I trusted them with the economy. I think they have an awful lot to answer for the current state of the country. There seems no clear strategy on anything, and this has fuelled poverty.

I used to use a filling station with attached supermarket that had the donations bin before you got to the tills which I thought was very generous of them

People in much poorer countries still live the way we used to. Many people here live on 2,500 a month working in hospitality 1000 goes on rent 1000 goes home to those kids in Asia , they live on 500 (about £100) in one of the most expensive cities in the world

Cost of living crisis, people are choosing food or heating often without either, people's wages haven't increased with inflation and there's a lot struggling.

Local councils have reduced funding to many places that help, children's centers, outreach centers and food banks, the economic strain is showing hugely at this time of year.
