I never understand why people give passwords and account details onto a 3rd party. But if anyone is think-tank of doing it I will gladly accept bank account numbers and pins too.

On a serious note as i worked in credit card fraud in past if you have half a brain why on earth give any passwords to anyone not only can they access what info you out here but also then use it to open other aspects of your life.

That can lead to other type of fraud in your name.

So let me get this straight, a complete stranger who may or may not of been a couple, "hacked" your account by the devious method of asking you what your password was

I am feeling pretty helpful at the moment, if you hide your door keys outside and tell me when you are away, we will come and water your plants... no need for a PM just post it here with your address of course

Actually I can see how.

If the OP gave someone access to his account, if he has his date of birth etc on his account, plus they know his name, it's not rocket science to then look for him on Facebook say, and it's been shown from social network sites all manner of information can be gleaned.

Add to that, most of us use the same password for everything, therefore...

Yep. If they have access to your account they have access to your email address. And Lets face it if you are stupid enough to give your password to someone you've never met probably have the same password for everything so they can get into your emails where you have probably saved all your login details for everything else.
