Well, that doesn't surprise me. Where I live, the average rent means that in the space of five years I will have given my landlord 150k and I'll have absolutely nothing to show for it and no other chance to save money for mine or my loved ones future. I think without a doubt it has a big impact on you as a person.

Not surprised. It’s transient, never knowing when you might receive notice to leave. Then there are so many potential renters for every property. Rents are soaring and often stupidly expensive compared to mortgage costs.

There are good landlords, however there are poor landlords who don’t carry out repairs and leave their tenants in properties in poor condition. None of this is positive to someone’s wellbeing.

My landlord........ Thanks for the £1,400 a month rent.

This does genuinely worry me for my children to be fair. Made my peace with them potentially living at home into their 30s etc.

I'll definitely help them buy their first place but I'd prefer it to be a solo venture (bad experience with an ex fiancée, my family helped, his didn't. He walked away from responsibility and demanded money to sign the property over when there was no equity- over a barrel).

After owning a couple of houses, I decided to rent when I separated. I've been in my flat for 9 years, and my landlord has made one rent increase in all that time - a massive £15 per month increase. My flat is fairly large, and is part of a Grade 2 listed county mansion, and my flat is valued at around £300,000, yet I pay £510 per month rent.

People often guess my age as 10 years younger than I actually am, so I'm obviously ageing slower, therefore debunking this "research".

That's how to rent stress-free right there!

For people who see that post as straight up, no one person can 'debunk' dual university research which has carefully compared two data sets, taking into account all similarities, to see if there is any significant differences.

Ah yes, I can see why one person's individual experience would override the research based on the experience of many. Perhaps they were also studying people in parts of the country where you can't rent very much for £500 a month, or whose landlords aren't as amenable as yours?

I don't know, but as others have said, I can see why stress caused by financial worries would affect someone's long term health. My instinctive reaction is sadness that some people find themselves in that position, rather than "I'm alright, Jack", but I guess we're all different...

A huge amount of people in Germany are happier renting all their lives, or at least that used to be the case.

This is partly about having to deal with guaranteed continual rent payment, and about general security in terms of both a roof over the head and payment stability (ie rent increases) in hard times of course.

In Britain there seems to be something culturally British about owning your own place too. So there might be a beneficial sense of fulfilment in owning something, I don't know.

Also there has to be some relief in actually being on the property ladder (ie also in terms of the comparative stress levels of renters vs owners), something that is not so easy to do any more. You can worry a little bit less about certain things like job security then, despite any mortgage you might have.

A property is also something you can leave, if you choose too.

I've assumed (as Tom NEVER cites) that factors like people's different incomes have been taken into account - this is simply proof that renting is more stressful than home owning, to the tune that it seriously effects our longevity.

There was also a lot of talk about the fact that landlords can only put the rent up by a certain percentage (it’s 4% pa for my landlord, but I am not sure if that’s across the board because I probably switched off for a while) whereas mortgages, especially when on a fixed term, can increase a massive.

That financial adviser is an idiot as already said mortgage generally cheaper than rent and even if you pay no extra in 25 years your done paying could end up paying rent for 50+ years who wants to worry about paying rent when a pensioner?

I've been in my 2 bed private rental property for almost 10 yrs and in all that time the rent has only been increased once, from £475 to a massive £493. I live in a row of 3 houses and the couple on the other end house pay £725 as they have a different landlord!
