Crackpot scientists in South Africa, also known as the Spingboks, have planted stereo speakers at animal watering holes as a type of strange experiment. They claim that human voices frightened water drinking animals more than the sound of lions. They claim that the animals were more frightened of the sound of humans than the lions. What's going on here guys. It all over the news

It's most likely because they are "unexpected" sounds.

Tom, I'm from South Africa, and I'M scared of the humans there. I give myself a fright just catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror, or answering the phone.

Humans are "bad news" for most animals, especially those considered "megafauna" which typically means animals weighing 50kg or more.

Every continent humans have ever inhabited suffered an immediate decline in megafauna once humans arrived. Africa - a somewhat rare exception until modern times - is known to be the "cradle of humanity" where humans evolved and migrated from. The reason we still have wild elephants, lions, cheetahs etc. is because they evolved with us and learned to completely fucking avoid us.

The further you go from Africa - especially without a land bridge (Asia, Europe, the Americas, Australasia) the worse the decimation has been. Have you seen a thylacine lately? How about a gompothere? Or a dodo?

Anyway...I'm a meat eater so not entirely innocent but most of the meat I eat is domesticated or farmed. Well, apart from the odd wild boar, deer or rabbit anyway.

"But what is actually going on here ,?"

The scientists came up with a theory they wanted to investigate and that was the result.
