My energy provider is now offering smart meters . Are there any downsides to having one??

I'm not sure if get charged for them, like the key meter ones they charge but you don't see it

I think you will find that all smart meters will take pre-payment cards. That is why we now have record numbers of consumers moved onto pre-payment on a whim by power suppliers.

This was predicted to happen years ago and shure enough, it has happened.

And it's a real pain in the arse getting the power company to move it back to a credit meter. Scottish power did it to me when my partner died and I was trying to take over the contract. They put the gas meter on to prepayment and it took more than 2 months to get them to rectify their mistake.

yes its a bit like having a fuel indicator in your car you watch it trying to get the optimum useage but bottom line is you can't always have the optimum

Presently there is very little difference to you whether you have a smart meter or not other than more accurate billing.

In the future there may be disadvantages but at the moment it is mostly here say and speculation.

As someone in “the trade” I wouldn’t have one at all as I’m aware of the potential worst case scenarios for the consumer. But I wouldn’t let that worry you, I’m probably paranoid.

Just as another viewpoint, shell energy took 24hrs from request to implementation when we moved into a property that had a prepayment meter already in situ. I think it depends on supplier tbh

I had one fitted yesterday. Wasn't keen but really just got bored of the pestering by my energy company.

Im already very efficient in my use anyway so won't make a difference there.

Yes but if your meter certification expires you have no choice sadly but to have a smart meter as they don't replace them with old style meter anymore. And if certification expires it is a legal requirement that the meter is replaced.

My electricity company keeps sending emails . As my meter is out of date. They want to fit a smart meter. Yet no reply to me when I say they can fit. If they fit and turn off smart meter mode . This can be done . No reply from them. Yes have checked online and it is fact that you can request a smart meter to be put into dumb mode . So no display. Yes will still have to do as now send meter readings online .

I just did the same snd asked them to confirm that they will put it in dumb mode. Not had a reply yet.

But they say they don't have any as they are not produced anyome. So how do you go about getting one as the gov website says that if your meter comes to an end they must reolace with smart unless there is a good reason not to.

I can purchase and install them, you can purchase them too.

They have chosen to not tell you this.

Certain properties cannot be fitted with one but they aren’t going to volunteer this information to you.

As such they do have a stock of regular meters and they will keep producing them.

I’m not fully aware but I think most of Europe are not pushing these meters like us and we are not on specific uk meters, we are on 50hz European ones.
