It's similar to this for me.

It is situationally dependant. But if they are unclean. The clothes can be worn or old but preferably clean.

But inappropriate slogans etc they too are a turn off

I don't have a problem with that in winter.

I used to fly to the West Indies and it was utterly pointless wearing heavy winter shoes for the journey. However, barefoot in sandals at that time of year at this end of the journey is pushing it for comfort.

Similarly, I would wear thermals under tropical trousers and remove them towards the end of the flight.

That way I also kept luggage to a minimum.
