"That’s ridiculous Teachers have 48 weeks off in the summer! They can clean teeth of other people's children too. It's not the parent's job to teach children social skills or anything else. " Back in my day kids could pretty much read fluently when they started school. In my kids day they were all fully toilet trained and could dress themselves and do their teeth. The way this is going they’ll not even be walking or talking at school age

"Do they wipe arses too?" Teachers have wiped arses , changed nappies and toilet trained children for years now..... Used to be that your child could not start pre school until they were toilet trained... then the powers that be decided that this was unfair to the child ( and in someways it was ) so for years we've had teachers trying to teach with half of their brain and body while the other half deals with the more basic needs of the child. Once this was set in stone , more and more and more parents saw it as the teachers duty and stopped toilet training their own children. They could do it when they thought they wouldn't be able to palm little freddie off at half eight.

"Too much gaming.. Loss of social skills. Too much tv.. Loss of social skills. Dentist is only one for me who told me how to brush my teeth properly. Twice a day for 3 mins. I have electric massager for my teeth. Works wonders " Shite parenting.

"This is crazy, teachers work some crazy hours for the money they earn. I wonder how many people would be happy getting to work before 8am getting home around 5pm then looking after their own children putting them to bed then spending the night marking a child who cannot be bothered to learn what you teach them, only to get pulled apart by that child's parents at parents evening?" One of the most difficult and unappreciated job by parents who have no sense of their own responsibilities and politicians who like to play around with education and health constantly for cheap electioneering. Enough said.

"It’s about time that the onus for children’s behaviour was put back on the parents! Unfortunately an increasing number of parents see their kids as objects and don’t feel any love or responsibility for them " Totally agree. Also the amount of shite, lazy parents trying to get their kids diagnosed adhd or autistic.

"Let’s be honest though being a teacher is a doddle. Especially in primary school. Teach a few easy things, break time, plenty of holidays, bit of a piss take they aren’t expected to do more " So controversial.

"Some of us are old school and actually teach our kids all the basics before they go to school, including how to brush their teeth and wipe their own arse! " Thing is... While sir is wiping little Jonnys backside, he isn't teaching the other kids other valuable bits.... (I mean wiping your arse is valuable of course) Of all the things for strike action... Having some boundaries of what teachers will and won't do would be right up there. If they need additional help bring the social workers in.

Generally that is mostly true but there are some rank lazy teachers out there stealing a living too. Yes I've worked with them. Even then I still wouldn't expect them to brush teeth.

"What’s the context though? My daughter’s school is teaching about hygiene etc and they’ve asked us to send a toothbrush, soap and a flannel in. They brush their teeth after lunch as part of it. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. If it’s because parents can’t be arsed or children are going to school dirty and not brushing their teeth then it’s different. " I'd guess probably a bit of both. The idea is to improve our kids dental hygiene as apparently is fucking awful.

"Good deflection away from what 23 years of catastrophic management has caused the UK to get to" It's not the government's fault. It's the lazy doctors, nurses, rail people, teachers, etc who are messing up this country.

"When I had problems with my ex wife over access to my children, one of the allegations was, I made them clean my toilet. In reality my youngest (who’s autistic) wouldn’t do any jobs I’d ask him to do (to earn his pocket money)however he didn’t mind cleaning the toilet bowl and sink next to it. So we’d do it together, the other lad would have to hoover and tidy his bedroom. I get worried about offering my lads jobs when they ask for more pocket money or me to download a game that cost a couple of quid. For me I’m teaching them life skills but potentially for a devious ex partner you’re using them as cheap labour. Unfortunately the more I ask them (the oldest is 14) can they do certain little tasks like basic cooking skills they tell me they can’t, the only cleaning they seem to do is at my place. So it’s not surprising that many other children are only learning skills at School. " Don't give up Steph. You're teaching them good life skills.

"It boggles my mind what some parents actually do for their kids. Teachers I know tell some concerning stories, kids in high school can’t tell the time on a watch face that isn’t digital, struggle to read, many have never set foot outside their own town, some even don’t know how to get home from school alone (shocking for a high school child). The government need to stop putting things at the schools door and look at other options for social issues. " Struggling to read is very real. I have a class, (yes a lower ability group but still) average reading age is 6.4 months they are 13/14. In terms of how they will be able to access their gcse papers in my subject where the reading age is 16 it feels pretty hopeless.

I mean difficult. I mean to listen to. And they walk in straight lines. Don't be so hard on them

" Well in this particular case, not sure what govt can or are expected to do to encourage better and in some cases any parenting of offspring. Certainly shouldn't be teachers always filling the parents / guardians failings though. Maybe it's down to global warming.
