Why has the word Woke been taken and turned into a slur. It’s gone from genuinely caring about racism to I don’t even know what and that is the doing of I don’t know who and I don’t know why. But can’t they find another fucking word instead of taking words used in resistance by people?

Eurgh

Anyway one more get up until the weekend.

Because the snowflakes don't like actually like to think about their own behaviour and think demonising certain words takes away its power and renders it meaningless.

I recently asked this very same question. My brilliant friend who shares the most insightful answers to questions that make my mind boggle, at times, shared this article: https://www.naacpldf.org/woke-black-bad/

A very, in depth, and thorough explanation of how woke went from “black” to “bad”.

Unfortunately many a good meaning cause has been diluted by those who like to jump on the passing train.

Like I said I think there is a difference between "woke" and "wokeism"

But anything that promotes racial equality can't be bad.

It's the current right-wing strategy. Slag off and demonise people and ideas they don't like, while offering no actual solutions that could become government policy that would make people's lives better.

Take the Republican party in America for example. They only care about two things: banning abortion and cutting taxes for the rich. They don't even really care about the former in a lot of cases. It's just a way of getting the evangelical Christian voting block on their side.

Look at Trumpists at his rallies. I have seen so many interviews with actual supporters who are just racist bigots who hate gay people and think the most serious problem in the world is transgender people. Yet they are fine with Putin invading Ukraine.

What interest would these people have in a woke agenda? None. Can they say they want to be openly racist? Well, it's not a good look so instead they label everything they don't like as "woke" and never actually degine what they mean by it. But what they meanis anything that says they shouldn't be bigots.

Sadly it has been a very successful strategy.

I think like all language, the meaning (to some) has evolved over time? Maybe? Dunno.

If woke means having a social conscience and promoting equality then it’s hard for any reasonable person to criticise it.

It’s the nonsense like removing the word “women” from official documentation and relabelling them as “chest feeders” or the like that gets some peoples heckles up.

At my old job I understand that now that people are mandated to include their pronouns in their email footer. To many of the ‘old school’ it’s kind of an alien concept.

Sure, make it *optional* AND respect the pronouns if someone *chooses* to list them, that’s their prerogative.

But it’s things like *mandating* people to do it that people will label as ‘woke’.

Pointless thread.

No one who wants to preserve the dictionary definition of the word will listen anyway.

Word uses naturally adapt over time.

I wonder if you felt the same way when "sick" was reimagined.

Indeed. Nobody owns a word or its definition - sick, bad, wicked etc all used to mean not good. Now they mean the opposite in many cases.

Not sorry to see the back of it. Horrible word apart from when it's used properly. We have plenty of words already. Maybe we can use our lovely language to actually say what we mean rather than secret society words. Like. Just be human to eachother. We don't need shorthand.
