Den of Iniquity

I'm officially on holiday till Monday so my question is this ...

Within 40 to 50 miles of Northampton, I need suggestions of lovely towns or cities to visit for a day trip ..

Where are the hidden gems to go and great food spots please ...

Not Luton though

.

St Albans is a beautiful city - lovely for walks, great food and pub scene. Bit expensive but good for a day trip.

In a similar vein but admittedly larger, Cambridge is lovely. I have a soft spot for Ely (hello books), but it might be just over your mileage.

Definitely visit there! And go to Fitz' for their amazing Chelsea buns; I have many happy memories of the day after May Balls enjoying freshly baked pastries and sitting on the lawn.

The Igloo

Coventry cathedral(s) is free. Stunning buildings. If you like motorbikes there’s the motorcycle museum near Birmingham airport.

by the big field

Depends what you want to do, if tilts just escape the built up bits to something more easy on the eye, The Wilbrahams about 6-7 miles out of the centre is all thatched cottages and a decent looking pub for lunch- or an alternative is Baldock near Letchworth, but more built up but looked rather nice on the occasions I’ve driven through it
