"St Albans is a beautiful city - lovely for walks, great food and pub scene. Bit expensive but good for a day trip. In a similar vein but admittedly larger, Cambridge is lovely. I have a soft spot for Ely (hello books), but it might be just over your mileage. " I was born in Cambridge tbf .. Not a bad shout

"Coventry cathedral(s) is free. Stunning buildings. If you like motorbikes there’s the motorcycle museum near Birmingham airport. " I actually looked at Cov earlier as it's on my direct train line haha

"Depends what you want to do, if tilts just escape the built up bits to something more easy on the eye, The Wilbrahams about 6-7 miles out of the centre is all thatched cottages and a decent looking pub for lunch- or an alternative is Baldock near Letchworth, but more built up but looked rather nice on the occasions I’ve driven through it" I shall Google
