The Scottish Chief of Police has been forced to cough up 60k to four officers who were ordered to shave off their beards. It is not known whether these officers were male or female.

What's going on here guys. It's all over the news

Literal madness. I swear the world ended in the 90's and we've been in a communal nightmare death sentence since. The ones who have woken up to it just cant seem to wake the rest up, they seem to love the nightmare.

Guys, how else do you propose stopping people with power abusing their powers in such a way? Other than the traditional way of fines /and compensation (which in these cases is effectively the fine) - and example making?

Or are you happy with such institutions ordering people to change their physical appearance?

We fine such institutions as a *punishment* and sometimes that fine is by way of compensation.

You really don't need to say the world has 'literally gone mad'!!

And if you do actually think the order was ok..

Then how does such a lack of freedom fit into your ever-scandalised anti-woke world?

I do struggle to understand where some people really stand on 'freedom.' One minute they want to see it everywhere as their human right, the next they will quite harshly take it away from people - often because they are so wary of human rights!

Or do you all just agree with Thatcher and think that responsible men simply shouldn't wear beards?

There's a basic democratic principle that those affected by a decision should have the greatest say. The officers are the most affected they vote against the decision. It is nullified. Beards remain - no fines.

Almost everything effects the tax payer ultimately, I don't really get that argument at all. It benefits us here to fine even the police - almost always it will be in compensation, but the principal is the same. Not sure why you mention democracy? Are you saying that the police etc should be able to democratically vote against orders they are given?

Not sure what a 'basic democratic principle' is... I don't see how that is one tbh... sounds more like a legal thing.

The institution needs to know not to do it again. I tried to highlight the 'punishment' side to fines/compensation. They were clearly being 'held to task' here - which would have made Tony Benn happy.

In a relative sense, within the system as it stands yes. You asked how else it could be done without fines.

It is called the all-affected principle. It's also related to the concept of being governed by consent and anarchistic views of non-hierarchical distribution of power. You were concerned with liberty?

My view is that direct democracy is the best approach to liberty. And is superior to fines, within a hierarchical system.

In this instance absolutely yes I am suggesting that police ought to be able to vote against that decision. I am not saying this is an exhaustive principle applicable to any decision.
