Did you know The etymology of flat originates from the Old English word “flett,” dating back to the 1300s. The term means level and in one plane.

"While we're on the subject may I ask what a condo and a duplex are please?"

Condominiums are usually owned outright, whereas apartments are typically rented. (US only). But we don't use the term Condo in the UK.

Duplex are maisonettes: two apartments with two floors joined together with a common stairwell.

Thank you Nero, most informative.

I guessed a duplex might be a maisonette but I had no idea a condominium was usually owned outright.

I once owned a lovely maisonette in Brighton, all high ceilings and tiled fireplaces
