So today at work I have been given a small laptop which my manager spent 5 hours to partially set me up.In order to log in I no longer use my smartcard & password instead it’s face recognition. There are various cables that I have to plug into the actual PC monitor to use the PC screen so that I can see what I am doing as well as the mouse and headset. I am not the best with technology and I feel very daunted and out of my depth with the new way of working. I understand the saying nothing is permanent except change but this is one change I could have done without. I am 55 years old and struggling with the way the world is moving.Anyone else feel the same or am I a old git who should now make way for the younger generation to take over.

Slow down and give yourself time to get used to it. What seems confusing will soon make your working life easier but it’s like learning to dive - you’ll wonder how you managed without the car but need to go easy on yourself while learning.

Don't be shy to ask for more training, Cos. CPD comes in various forms. It's not necessarily an "age" thing. I have older people on my team who are tech wizzes (and some not) and younger people who are tech challenged (and not). We're all at different stages, just don't try to convince yourself that you WILL struggle and instead take your time, make notes on how to use your new set up and ask for help if you need it.

Yours truly,

A Manager and

Dad's Distance IT Tech

Write it down. Ask for it to be explained again and write it down step by step, draw diagrams if you feel it will help.

I used to work with a woman your age who would often get flustered and lose her confidence if she felt things were too ‘techy’ as she called it. We arranged for IT to spend an afternoon a week with her to go over things at her pace. It made such a difference to her and made her feel like she was in a bit more control. You’re definitely not alone

Good luck OP!

And if the laptop is at home, cover the camera with tape at any times you don’t need to be physically seen at the other end (eg doing video calls etc.) and make sure the microphone is off.

You never know who is watching or listening in

I don't pay for things with my phone (insofar as I don't use it to 'bip' like a debit card). I still use my debit card! I selectively catch up.....

Thanks for the replies.Well today I came into work plug in a couple of wires and my manager helped me with the rest. The work transformation which was supposed to happen didn’t.My manager and another lady who is good with technology helped as best they could. In the end we called the work place telephone number we have. After talking to my manager they said they would contact her ASAP when they have identified the fault.I have been told to go back to working from my smartcard as before. My colleagues at work said they should have given me a service pro instead of a Lenevo as apparently they are easier to set up
