True love?

This week my grandmother rejoined my grandfather, which means I’ve been working on my eulogy for the funeral and it got me thinking.

They were together for over 60 years and my grandfather always said she was his dream girl.

And so I’ve been wondering how many people get their dream partner? How often are they also true love? Or does true love not always align with your dreams?

I'm sorry for your loss. What a beautiful way to think of them being reunited.

I'm sure true love does exist, twin flames, soul mates, all of those things.

I'm just sad that not everyone gets to find theirs

That’s the old school love I admire. One where you just know you want to spend your life and time with them. 60 yrs. and now together again

Very few people find true love.

Most just settle.

I am sorry for your loss.

Whilst every ounce of knowledge I have scientifically and philosophically suggests it is fantasy.

My experience of true love, first date in Blackpool by the way, is so profound that it felt eternal.

And my one singular dream is the hope of the reunification, in any shape or form, that you suggest.

I have faith in Love as a consequence of its experience.

"Very few people find true love.

A bit like trying to buy my favourite beer. And have to sip a pint of Amstel.

Some times you just gotta make do with what you've got to hand.

So I should propose to the barmaid? Is that what you’re saying?

Leave the restaurant/pub Woody. There are other establishments that will give you the pint you want and even throw in some cheeky crisps as well.

I think love exists, but I think bu the time we work out who we are ourselves, what we want and gain the emotional maturity to go with it, we've experienced the effects of our bad choices along the way, losses and mistreatment from others. The movie scene romance then becomes something with pain attached to it and we avoid it.

I agree with Carrie though most settle and don't ever truly find it. Some will say they are in love when really they are just in love with the idea of someone and the fairytale scene they picture in their heads.

While others focus on fairytale like love they miss what is right in front of them and discard it without a second thought, too impatient to see it blossom and be exactly what it is. But I also think society drives people to pair up and find security in the set ups in various forms and that isn't healthy as people's feelings are less important than the security they need. And many live miserably in the process and hold others back.

But maybe I'm just a cynical cow.

I'd love that one person that I adore and feel at one with, wouldn't we all if we soul searched and were honest? If we hadn't been through pain from it already?

Switch to Bourbon: Woodford Reserve it's got your name on it.

When you find one who'll fix you an old fashioned and give you the come to be eyes...

One beer is the same as any other.

I don't think true love exists these days, if it does it's very rare thing to find

Sorry for your loss, I agree true love does exist & my grandparents were shining examples I always dreamed of a relative like theirs.

Luckily I think I've found my person.

Condolences to you and your family.

True love exists. Its never like you dream it's going to be but it is knowing that there's always someone who's got your back. Even if you've done something really, really stupid

Thanks for all the condolences, I think true love was something more from the previous generations like grandparents when the world was a much smaller place, with the technological world and the abilities that come from that I’m starting to think that true love may exist but the disposable society means that people don’t want to put in the hard work these days. Either that or I’m just a sentimental romantic haha

I think that many people were in loveless marriages that lasted a long time because there was no alternative and they just grew used to each other. I believe there's as much 'true love' around now as there ever was but far fewer people in unhappy marriages.

I do agree with you though that some people miss out on true love because they give up when the going gets rough.

I think most people have a range of compatible people, rather than "one true love".

We have a true love relationship .

We met when we were 13 and 14.

40 year later with 3 kids and 9 grandchildren.

You read about soul mates and it really feels like that for us.

That we were together before this life and will be together after this life.

We love each other as much now than we did when we first met.

I agree with this. I also think it's possible to have true love more than once

Oh dear!

We were discussing love just this morning actually. My parents were married for 67 years when mum died last year. It was an interesting journey

Sorry for your loss, my parents have been married for 34 but they are too individuals who should have stayed independent as they just grate on each other these days

We've been together for 38 years.

Has it always been easy?

No.

But a real, meaningful relationship takes work.

It's very easy to give up and walk away.

But if you really love someone, you have to be willing to make it work, accept they aren't perfect, accept you also have your flaws, and accept that, if you both work together, as a team, you can survive and flourish.
