Charity shop bosses are saying that stealing from charity shops is on the increase. Tom has never been in one and respects that poor people have to shop in charity shops to survive. But most stuff is donated so are these ships really losing out or just helping the impoverished poor. The Lord Helps those who help themselves. What is going on here guys. It's all over the news

I guess people are desperate. Personally, if I see anyone stealing basics, no I didn't.

There's also push back against alot of big charities where the funds raised barely reach the cause. Perhaps that could be at play too?

Theft is up across the board, as the cost of living clamps harder and harder.

I don’t judge. How many missing pay packets are any of us away from living on the streets or sofa surfing?

I see Wilko staff pension pot is short of money. The owning family took many £millions from the company, including this year. Their loyal staff put themselves at risks stopping shoplifters, whilst they were personally victims.

Thefts are going to happen to all businesses, including charity shops. I hope their er elderly volunteers don't get hurt

It's not just poor people who shop in charity shops. Many young people do as well.

Aren't we in a recycling world?

I can vouch for this. I know someone who works in one and from the look of the thieves it's not out of desperation. They usually buy something as a distraction while trying to conceal.

To sell in the pub later with all the other stuff they have nicked that day.One guy comes in with a least four carrier bags,he makes more money in a lot shorter "working" day than someone on minimum wage.

Does anyone believe that in some charity shops the good stuff is filtered first and the best stuff goes out the back door so that only the tat is left. Tom will never set foot in a charity shop. Overpriced and a haven for insects.

Depends on the manager/staff.I have known managers and staff making good money on the side effectively stealing stuff that has been donated. Its not uncommon or just one or two rotten apples.

Dear Tom.

No. You are wrong in every way. I work for a charity that protects adults, one shop not several. Yes, we sort out clothes high end low end and rag. Nothing is wasted. Nothing syphoned off as you say. Rag goes to countries less fortunate to have clothes.

Stealing comes from staff.. He had gambling addiction stole the takings, she was caught giving things to her friends for nothing.

I am neither poor or rich I buy from charity because in my job I need a mortgage to have different clothes.

I enjoy buying books, some educate me. I buy cds.. Dvds.. Some great purchases. I live on a budget it does not mean I am poor. I donate my time to support those in need. Here and abroad. What I buy I donate. To find cures for cancer is not a poor persons way of being.

You work for one shop.It is a rarity if it is run the way you say.I know of many "bent" charity shops,it's either the manager or staff, they don't steal as such they put stuff through the till at £1 or £2 pounds then sell it themselves, usually e bay.

Lol. I regularly visit charity shops as you can find some unique items there, for what used to be a fraction of the original price. However, some charities are now charging almost as much as the original price despite the items having been given to them for free. I get that they need to pay people to sort through the donations (a lot of them are volunteers though), storage, rent etc. And their CEOs wages...

Also, finding a working changing room is almost unheard of in charity shops (and plenty of supermarkets, though).

Tom, I work as a Volunteer at a Charity Furniture retail shop and business has never been better for our store.

That's because people, looking for furniture items, aren't buying brand new due to the high costs plus potential long delivery waiting times. In contrast, charity furniture outlets can provide an alternative cheaper option often with delivery within a few days!

To answer your point regarding only the best goods get to the shop floor, that is only part of the equation. When goods are collected, the shop will have already checked with the customer that the goods are in good condition, no damage etc, plus with upholstered items, it cannot be uplifted unless there are Fire Labels attached.

Due to changes earlier this year in safe disposal of Upholstered items, people nowadays tend to try and use charity collections as a free disposal service! Not with us; van crews are trained to ensure goods are of saleable quality and will reject goods that don't qualify.

Shoplifting is a big issue for us. It's usually smaller items nicked, but shoplifters try every trick going, eg, swapping price tickets between goods, or trying to return items we've never sold anyway, but don't have receipts.

Recently, a group of guys walked into the shop, created a diversion, whilst others picked up a Double Bed Frame and Mattress and took it out of the shop! That's extreme, but losing stock is regular, and it's the research arm of the charity that loses in the long run.

The Police keep us informed regularly, with pics of the known criminals for us to display in the office. Others have lifetime bans from ever returning.

Nearby shops & supermarkets, are hit almost every hour in the day time! Security staff in them are v busy indeed. We're fortunate in having volume of personnel on our shop floor each day which acts as a deterrent most of the time, but we're not allowed to put ourselves at risk.

I go in my local Red Cross shop to check out their jewellery, scarves and kids books.

They’re cheap as chips - you could go in with £5 and come out with a shopping trolley half full of stuff!

Stealing is wrong folks!

The first album I owned was Adam and the ants Kings of the wild frontier.

I was up early and walked past a charity shop that hadn't opened yet and someone had dumped a large box of mint condition vinyl. Kings of the wild frontier was on the top. I was so temped to take it and frame it.

But never taken anything that wasn't minein my life. Should have went back later and bought it

The charity shop I work at had a huge batch of Vinyl Albums donated in a home clearance earlier this year. Some dated back to the 50's. We sold them off very cheaply, I think at 3 for £1. Took two weeks to see them go to very happy customers!

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

I value antiques/collectables for three charity shops (Age UK and Air Ambulance), most think they can value stuff themselves via Google or e bay(instant armchair experts) so they fuck up,always.Ask too much so it doesn't sell most of the time, occasionally a gem slips through. Most charity shops won't accept offers of free valuations, they think you are trying to rip them off. When they screw up I don't tell them, they are the "experts",they've priced it,their loss, fair game.

Of course it's wrong to steal. The charity shops yes, will make something on the clothes etc as they are donated. But they do need to cover the staff they employ, the bills for the property that sells the clothes, the stuff they need in the shop ie tags etc, of course donating some to the cause they are raising for and then also putting some back into the business for advertising, maintaining the buildings/shop props etc and also their investor etc. As to be fair it is a business. So yes the raising money will be a goal, but there is other stuff too to consider and the initial goal, the raising money wouldn't be possible without the other stuff.

That's my view anyway

To be fair. People may steal but mostly they are trying to survive. Possibly not on benefits but close to it.

Fair game in some people's eyes

It arrived free and hit stollen. It's all going to charity at the end of the day
