Electric Bikes

I've been looking to buy a ladies electric bike, or a mans one, I can still cock my leg over my mountain bike !!

The more I look the more confused I get.

Why such price differential, is it battery quality / life.

I generally put my mountain bike on the car bike rack and drive to beach area etc so want one I can lift up without busting a gut.

Any ideas, tips.

They are quite a bit heavy than normal bikes so defiantly look at the weight when comparing ebikes. I love mine. I opted for a folding bike and that works well for me.

I have a Gocycle which is very good but on the expensive side. The G4 is a folder with 20 inch wheels but becomes the size of a 'normal' bike when unfolded.

Pedelecs.co.uk is a very good website for all things e-bike as is the Electroheads channel on Youtube.

It may be worth looking whether your employer (assuming you have one) offers a cycle to work scheme. You pay for the bike from your salary before tax is deducted so you save around 20% and there's no obligation to use it to travel to work.

What's your budget and what type of riding do you want to do? Even am entry spec eMTB will be expensive so if you're just cycling along a seafront then a more casual type of bike might be more suitable? Or, if you're riding off road then the MTB might be worth looking at. A hardtail would be better budget wise for light off road stuff. Once you start getting into trail bike territory, things get more expensive.

Bike racks are generally not suitable for ebikes. Mines a 'lightweight' bike at ~20kg and despite being technically withing the eight limit for the roof system, there's no way I'd put it on the roof like my non electric bike... If you've got a normal, strap it to the boot type rack, it almost certainly won't be safe to transport an ebike.

You can get some racks which will. Thule Outway for example. Ideally though, a towbar rack is what you want. You can also get roof carriers designed for ebikes but it means you have to lift the thing onto the roof.

Thanks everyone for all the information. As always, its a bit more complicated than I thought but be nice having a look around and I'll chat to folks I see out and about as most are only too happy to give me their stories.
