If you want odd with a good dollop of humour in there, Prime currently has a nice HD copy of Space Truckers for streaming.

I finally caught up with a few weeks ago, over 25 years after it came out, and it was fun. A sly Dennis Hopper, Charles Dance with a robotic cock and a good dose of the absurd - all from the director of "Reanimator".

You know a film isn't taking itself too seriously when the big, orchestral music score over the end credits suddenly switches to... Cotton Eye Joe!

I watched that a few months ago when I had a Prime trial. My jaw was on the floor for most of it! Amazing cast, design that reminded me of The Fifth Element, but a total b-movie in every other respect.

As someone who likes to own physical things and not stream at all if I can, I buy all my films as blu-rays (or failing that DVDs). Is a trip to town or a short wait in the post allowed?

Logan's Run has held up I think (I'd put it with the classics maybe - the 70's classics for sure.)

Of the recognised classics I really enjoyed the film Stalker, and I thought the recent Blade Runner sequel (rather weakly) ripped it off a bit. It's only-just scifi really, as is the original Solaris despite the fact it's set in space.

Idocracy (by Mike Judge) gets forgotten but is enjoyable (and timely)

For something lighter... Firefly the series then the film Serenity.

Moon was the last scifi I saw and enjoyed, it was kind of like the great Silent Running. pt

In time was not a box office smash when it came out over 10 years ago but it’s a fantastic concept.

As Solaris and Moon are already mentioned I'll add The Plan if you saw the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. If you haven't seen the series (as good as any film imo but a LOT longer) you need to consult the internet as to which point to slot it in though.

Anything set in an alternative present or future typically gets classed as scifi.

As I remember the film of Running Man was even more 'futuristic' than the novella (though I probably remember the novella more tbh).

Moon massively underated Sam Rockwell is brilliant.

Sci-Fi/horror then event horizon is really good.

Sunshine is visually great and pretty good.

Yes forbidden planet brilliant.

But actually Dune aside,

I'd actually go for a series The Expanse is just about the best sci-fi series well thought and actually science wise accurate.

If you like Die Hard watch Lockout. Same sort of film, but on a space station.

Or you watch 5th element since we are already mentioning Bruce Willis.

Space Odyssey is really a weird film, not worth watching although it is mentioned a lot for some reason.

The martian - since saving Matt Damon twice before was not enough they now have to do it from Mars as well. That dude is getting lost in a phone booth....

Prey was an awsome instance in the Predator series. We all know most of the movies sucked, besides the one with arnold and maybe the second one, but this one is really, really good. Set in the 18th century america focusing on an american native woman who just wants to become a hunter like the boys...

Interstellar - because if you haven't seen it, you're dead ignorant.

Or watch the thing because nothing is cooler than Kurt Russel fighting for survival on the south pole.

Yeah, no, it's a 2,5-3 hour long very boring movie, with very long scenes that are very pretentious.

Typical Kubrick film though. But I prefer a captivating story told well with nice visuals, instead of something purposely artistic. There is no message, no story, just 2-3 very dragged out substories without any real context.

It's a hard one to follow though, Primer (literally about some clever people discovering then building and testing a home-made time 'shifting' machine), one I may have to go back to one day as the dialogue made me and my then-partner a bit cross-eyed (though it was probably supposed to to some degree I expect).

An absolute must see for any discerning sci-fi fan.

It inspired so many great sci-fi films - the alien feeding scene was actually the basis for the Alien franchise which Dan O’Bannon (who plays Pinback in Dark Star) went on to write.

"I’ve always loved The Time Machine. "

Original or remake? Whilst neither quite live up to HGW's novella the latter (2002) film was probably closer in spirit.

The Giant Claw probably the best movie ever, youtube or talkin pictures tv. Listen out for the mis pronounciation of General Buskirks name by Mara Corday.

The movie's concept was way ahead of it's time.

It's definitely not a....... turkey

Watched a weird one the other day, Shape of Water. I guess a romance kind of sci fi film. So probably not what you’d be interested in A long with About Time, The Time Travellers Wife, Bicentennial Man. All sci fi/romance. I enjoyed Dark and Black Mirror series on Netflix.

" Barbrarela not sure if thats the right spelling Jane fonda. Karen"

I recall seeing this on TV as a child and having watched it again as an adult, I'm pretty sure this is where a lot of my kinks stem from.

"Don’t think it’s been mentioned yet surprisingly, but ‘District 9’ is an amazing watch if anyone hasn’t seen it! "

Agree, It’s a great great bit of Sci-fi with a powerful social commentary. I wish there was a second film where they made home and come back…

A few people have said Ad Astra but personally I found it a load of ol bollocks

Some great suggestions in this thread. Following on from Brazil might i add another unhappy ending from Gilliam with 12 Monkeys.
