What is it that makes people make stories up about their lives. I dont mean in swinging i mean in life in general. Is it lack of confidence, is it to become more popular or do they actually believe the stories they tell, do they think people believe them or do they do it because they entertain people

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think some people do it because they don't have confidence being themselves. Some do it to manipulate a situation. Some do it because they are seriously deluded.

I also think there are a lot of fantasists on-line and they end up frustrating others because they can't go through with a face to face meeting.

have met a few men off the internet who liked to tell stories.

quite sad realy.

some men will tell you how much their wives like anal sex thinking it will make you want to do it.

one man i met had pictures from a porn site on his profile.

i didnt believe what he used to say to me sometimes and when i told him i didnt believe him he got quite cross.

he said, why dont you believe me and i said, lots of men like to fantasise and boast about the women they have met.

Depends what the stories are... I guess most people have at some point or another embellished a story, made themselves look funnier, bigger, more successful...We do so when we try and get a job for starters; well most of us I assume.

The difference between the above (which to me is pretty harmless stuff) and making up an entirely different alter ego is that the latter could be an indicaiton of a mental health problem so it has to be _iewed differently.

Somewhere in between the two I d say are the stories that are borne out of an attention seeking insecurity... for me that is a little bit of a turn off as I detect them quite quickly.

Most embellishments are fairly harmless in my experience.

I knew a guy, well not just as an aquaintance he lived a walter mitty life and he certainly wasnt harmless as he murdered his mum an dad, it was amazing what came out in the trial.

They did one of those true life crime programmes about him

Oh gosh, that is clearly the dangerous psychpathic type of story teller... apparently they are not always easy to spot either.

Noone in a million years would have guessed and even with hindsight i can honestly say there was nothing i could have picked up. Worst was he was the night porter where i worked and i used to sit drinking on my own with him till about two in the morning lol.

He used to meet women in Leicester and tell them he was a gynocologist, his parents where well known in the area and wealthy and he killed them because they wouldnt give him any more money

When I've had people do this it's always been down to lack of confidence or a need to put down others. The former is annoying though I can relate to the confidence aspect, but the latter is just nasty...

maybe its there persona ? its a role played by an actor. The word referred to a theatrical mask. Its meaning character of a theatrical performance actor could play different roles, And i think that's what some do here .. make things up change there personas .. bit like split personalities ..

it is like the first high for a crack user... the first fabrication that gets a positive reaction is the buzz, the creation of more to get that feeling again.... a form of chase the dragon/dream...........
