What’s the difference really???? We are currently on holiday and the thought always crosses our minds. People, men and woman, would never just walk about in a thong and bra or a guy in just boxers in normal life, close to each other, chatting away etc, but when swimming…….no problem lol

What’s the difference????

It's the beach.

The beach legitimises bare bodies

I reckon that people originally swam naked even though they wore clothes normally. Then convention changed and nudity wasn't acceptable so swimming needed clothes. As time progressed those clothes got smaller but remained swimming or beach wear.

Yeah, a strange separation.. Last holiday Mr walked into a shop just off the beach in board shorts and flip flops to get us some water, came back to fetch a t shirt to get served 40 metres away from topless sunbathers..

I'm probably really old fashioned but I don't want to weighing my onions next to a 75 year old in Speedos

Agreed……however yesterday, I, Jeni was stood next to a guy in speedos, won’t shame him in saying 75 maybe 60s lol, no more than a foot away on the stairs for the flumes while I was in a two piece, so essentially bra and pants! And didn’t think anything of it! But yes in Asda, this would seem odd! It’s a strange one!

We used to swim regularly (until the pool shut but that's another story ) and people saw me and I them in far fewer clothes than would be acceptable anywhere else. Some of the very old ladies who undressed and bent over in front of me to put their knickers on still haunt my dreams .

I'm not age shaming, I'm an old bird myself. People will accept me in a bikini as long as a beach towel is nearby.

I think social convention means we accept fewer clothes in certain situations and we're far more ready to accept fewer clothes on young bodies

And it’s shifting a little more also, as we are not on a foreign holiday or anything but at a well known family park set in Robin Hood territory where it’s become normal now for a wide range of ages to wear thong bikinis also. Which of course gets a thumbs up from us, many seem to think it’s a bit much! If your in bikini bottoms anyways what the difference!

The amount of bare skin you can see I guess.

I'm not a fan of thong bikinis or underwear personally, I don't like how they look. I'm not bothered if anyone wants to wear them though.

Its a complicated subject. My mum was practically Victorian in her attitude to sex and nudity. She would have been deeply offended by a thong in public. I remember her shock when she opened a copy of Playgirl and it fell open at the naked centrefold. She screamed and dropped the magazine in the papershop

I'm sure he wouldn't. A 75 year old wouldn't put me off at the beach or pool though, just in Waitrose
