What screams "I AM UPPER CLASS" to you?

From the land of haribos.

It was interesting seeing the replies, continue here any late comers. I think that it actually comes in different ways and not just one thing of someones wealth.

Here are some of the examples that I will give and think it could be, of course how much one earns and flaunt their wealth by showing it off to everyone would probably be the nr1 thing when people think about it, another could be someone who likes to dress expensively, another one could might be how posh they talk.

I also did other ways of telling if someone is it with numbers, which number or numbers would you shoos to describe one the best? Or you could add your own, you could also mix and match with several of the numbers.

1. Good posture. If you look at how upper class people walk, they stand perfectly straight and have a graceful swing to their step.

2. Their wealth, like to show off.

3. Dress expensively.

4. Talk posh, like the standard british accent.

5. Being very respectful with staff, waiters, taxi drivers etc.

6. Eating all sorts of different food and not being fussy about food. This is a very tell tale sign again, someone who's reluctant about trying new food or has never tried foreign food is usually not upper class.

7. Being able to make small talk with basically anyone. This is an important skill to have and that we've learned by attending a lot of formal events.

8. Having impeccable table manners.

To me, someone who is upper class treats everyone with respect, they dont flaunt their wealth and they dont ever try to prove they have got money and with a mix of numbers 3, 5, 7 and 8, having said that. I think that a posh accent might say that a person is upper class and posh

A book by Kate Fox 'Watching the English' is a facinating and well researched read about this ,covers everything about class ,breeding upbringing, hatch match and dispatch.The section on car ownership is brill .

I worked a ski season with a lot of "upper class" and they were very much the same as us. Just posher accents

Regularly donates to the Tory party (discreetly of course).

Employs staff to look after their property (because they're normally staying in one of their other properties)... or if things have not gone well they have the National Trust manage their mansion but still live in the bit nobody can see.

Features in at least one article in Tatler magazine.

There was a certain lady on dragons den l worked for, she lived in ed the 7ths old mansion in derbyshire, only the bit you could see from the road ,the rest were flats. Pictures of princess anne everywhere, indoor swimming pool, yet she was down to earth working class, not a snobby bone in her body, She had a bentley she never used ,preferred taxis, Appearances can be deceptive.On secret millianaire she came across very well ,she was well liked, offered me a job at the time but l lived too far away and no vacancy in the outbuildings ,shame that.

People are just people. There are some horrible posh people and some lovely posh people same as there are horrible and lovely working class people.

You can’t stereotype a whole group of people just because of their economic status or upbringing though lots of people love to do it

Except that's precisely what a stereotype is.

Arguably though economic status doesn't = social class.

There are plenty of toffs with more in common with the 'working class' (whatever that is these days) than the wealthiest middle classes.

I find this topic fascinating. I think there is big difference between rich and wealthy and some people get them mixed up. Upper class will always be wealthy as it’s usually generational wealth and upbringings, private schooling etc. The way they talk, dress, hobbies etc are a giveaway. They want for nothing basically. Rich people who try to be upperclass just come across as try hard. They flash the cash right there and usually discuss money and assets. They also don’t have the background or the articulation to pull it off. Rich people who are modest with their money “could” pull it off if they learn upper class behaviours. I’ve never really thought about what class I’m in. Working I would assume

We've meet a few upper class people and often they are old school and not laoded with cash but may have a decent, older style house and no flash car

To meupper class is the way one sepaks

often drive an older car, often a volvo or audi estate - have a labador type dog or cat/s - read the gurdian/telegrpah eat out at a decent place at least once a week , watch rugby , wear old jumpers sweaters and have patches on their jackets - often educated to a very good standard and usally a hospital consultant, older soilictors, musicians, etc

We ahve decent amount of assests, a range rover, the proper one bought brand new almost 2 years ago, several properties, I have a genral standard of education several O levels and Mrs is a graduate, all three of our children are graduates and paid professioansls - their accesnts are upper class they way they speak, non slangly english where us I have a local accent - we are worth over xx amouth and have cash in the banks and we are by no means upper clase becuse of what I posted above

IMO, if you have earned your money like we have, you gradually build up on what you have - eg, from a mid terraced house, to semi, to modern detached large one and now a substantial, old large house - the cars used to be Fords 35 years ago, then audis then mercedes and we started buy brand new mercs then used big range rover and 2 years ago our first brand new one , ie as we gradually worked up, it just feels normal, nothing special and many out there with loads of money and in central london, knistbrige we have friends and they keep an old vw golf as a run-around, use cabs and tub and have a RR and bentley at their mansion in Weybridge but rarely there as work is in london - their proty in london is worth millions and they worked up, started a business, sold it started another and sold that for millions and their main income now is about 50 properties they rent out - they are no upper class but just decent people like us

If you have to sit in traffic to get to work for your money supply, you are working class regardless of the amount of supply you receive.

IMO, its a posh accent and classy, causla clothing and a not to flashy watch and they way you interact with others and the sbjects you chat about and get involved in

Worked in Lord Lucan’s old house in the 80s. (It was quite unsettling having my breaks in the basement kitchen)

Upper crust bloke who owned it had a bar in the drawing room and he got a French polisher in to freshen it up. The polisher told him the bar was varnished. He replied in the poshest accent I’ve ever heard “ my man, what do you think this is. A fucking public house.”
