Because it isn't worth the hassle for a male player to come out.

You've heard the kind of football songs sung in men's football. Why would anyone want to put themselves, and their team, and their own fans through that shit when they can just keep it quiet until they've made enough to retire and never work again?

Girls who were into sport growing up are more than used to homophobic slurs. To the point that it's basically expected.

The unfortunate truth is...in men's football the fact someone is gay will make them a target for abuse.

The abuse men would get whilst playing and also society accepts women coming out more than what it does men sadly.

Not just football but in general it seems more accepting for women to be in same sex relationships than men.

it’s even prevalent on here with many couples or women who won’t meet bisexual men or bi couples even for a straight meet.

Male football is big business not sport. Sponsors won’t like risking alienating paying fans. Players don’t want their transfer chances dashed. Homophobia is deeply ingrained in sone areas of society.

Have you done a quantitative analysis of this? I mean like actual data gathering? In any case what does a player’s sexual preference matter?

Men are still subject to a greater level of prejudice for not being straight than women are overall and this is especially perceived as true in football. It's really sad that we inhibit people from being themselves, whilst we credit ourselves as being an advanced society, with subtleties of difference between us and the countries who kill people due to their sexuality.

This is where the high pay that male footballers get actually works against them. Yes, homophobia is the root cause - but wouldn’t you stay in the closet for a few years if you knew coming out would risk x million a year?

Women, on the other hand, can probably earn the same with a normal job compared to what they get in pro football so there isn’t the same risk

I wouldn’t say there’s necessarily less homophobia in women’s football, but the factors at play result in homophobia being less influential. It’s often the same clubs, sponsors, and fans

I just think that in mainstream society lesbianism is more accepted and understood than homosexuality. Especially in certain environments for men (like sports and certain occupations like armed forces and construction) there's more of an old skool macho culture/attitude which could make coming out a hostile experience
