A report recently published says there are now 96,000 people living with the virus in the UK. That's a full Wembley Stadium, 96,000!!!

Health officials also warned that A QUARTER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE VIRUS ARE UNAWARE THEY ARE INFECTED!

Unsafe sex was given as the reason for an increase in numbers.

Gay and bisexual men diagnosed with the virus hit an all time high. One in 20 men who have sex with men in the UK now had HIV, with the figure soaring to nearly one in 12 in London.

Gay, bi, curious or straight, please don't take any risks. You never fully know if the other person has.

Here are some of the recent statistics:

96,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. 24 per cent of these people are undiagnosed and do not know about their HIV infection. In 2011, 500 people with HIV died. There were 6,280 new diagnoses in 2011. Nearly half (47 per cent) of the of people diagnosed with HIV in 2011 were diagnosed late, after they should have already started treatment. 48 per cent of new HIV diagnoses in 2011 were among men who have sex with men. All data is taken from the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

I agree... AIDS no longer needs to stand for Arse Injected Death Sentence if only people were more responsible and not so selfish as to want to risk shortening their own lives as well as others by having unprotected sex.

Getting tested after you've had some gay man bareback probing your sphincter or some bare-cocked bi guy pummelling your wife's Schnowzer is like closing the stable door AFTER leading supermarket chains have stolen your horse.

Another fact I picked up from the HPA 2011 statistics is that of all people that are receiving treatment for HIV in the uk a small majority of them define themselves as heterosexual compared to the slightly smaller number of those that state they are bi or gay. One of the fastest growing groups of new diagnosis in the UK is heterosexuals over the age of 50.

My point is that HIV is NOT a gay or bi condition, we are all at risk regardless of our sexuality or sexual preferences.

As has previously been said on here there is no such thing as safe sex , only safer sex, and through condom use and regular testing your own risk and the risk you hold for those you play with is significantly lessened.

I'm probably being a bit thick here (not had much sleep and brain not working) but if 24% of the 96,000 people that have HIV don't know they've got HIV how the hell does anyone else know? Did they test them, find it positive then tell them they were ok? I'm confused! Lol x

I guess providing estimated statistic is obviously not an exact science….

There are even some statistics available suggesting the number of gay or bisexual males in the UK could be approximately three million six hundred thousand, which when equated to the HPA claims of 1 in 20 rate of HIV infection rate equals approximately 180,000 cases,,,

Which is nearly twice that of their own estimated 96,000 claim

Which ever is neared the truth,,,, the truth is, its not worth taking risks…

Do you know maybe one day if a swinger you may have to show passport when tested to people we meet and to get into clubs... Your only clean and 100% safe when coming out the door of the gum if teast show you are. If meeting strangers for sex its high risk sex with people you don't know is and always will be. So each persons a risk . Its true.

"Interesting discussion on Radio 4 a while back with a guy from one of the HIV/ Aids charities questioning whether the use of the word 'bareback' encouraged practices which made the spread of infection easier than the word 'unsafe' (as opposed to 'safe') sex.

The bit that really gets my goat is the suggestion that only gay/bi men spread HIV.

I know plenty of straight people who are convinced the GUM clinic is not for them cos they don't have sex with prostitutes (cos even off duty ones have prossie tattooed across their tits) and they practice safe sex except for a) when d*unk and b) when they've known the other person for a few weeks and of course c) when doing it up the arse with another hetero cos, well, you can't get preggers up the arse. Oh and lets not forget the fact that they're completely straight and so is everyone that anyone who has ever had sex with anyone they've had sex with.

The figures have been on the years for a few years now. Some of the guestimate comes from the cases that are seen and an extrapolation from that of other sexual partners that may have been infected that can't be contacted. The rest they extrapolate from the trend statistics and from presentation of other STIs.

The over 50s are a particular worry as they assume their past clean history and the fact that they can't get pregnant is enough protection.

I think the 96000 is just a number and does not say much if you see it as a tiny percentage of the sexually active population.

Also, HIV is now a chronic disease as ppl can live with the virus for 25 years. More important is knowing how many NEW infections there are per year as this gives you and idea of how the virus is spreading.

Still a condom is the best way of reducing your chances of getting this and other viruses so I only play safe...

Exactly.... Reduces the risk!... Pretty much the same as wearing a seat belt in a car. If you get hit chances are your gonna get hurt, seat belt reduces the damage taken. You can't alleviate all risk, but there is a moral obligation if nothing else, to minimise the potential impact on others.

To add to the debate safe sex does not exist. Those practising safer sexual practices leeen the chance of accquiring a STI including HIV.

The accquistion of the virus is a major event in anyones life and with support and new treatments it is possible to lead a full and active life. However there is no room for complacency and as those above have pointed out the use of condoms and sexual health check ups helps to stop the infection rate from increasing.

Crossing the road is risky but if you follow the green cross code then you are likely to remain intact!

I went for my samples week past thursday and was told the patient records go back 10 yrs not the actual samples.

My point was that, when infected, you may not show any symptoms for up to 10 yrs.

As regards the testing procedures, I'm sure that it can be picked up fairly quickly. I think every 6 months is the usual time between tests ?

I got ny results back Thursday from the GUM clinic saying I am fine and using condoms every time after that means I will hopefully stay that way.

I only ever have not used condons with a current partner and after seeing each others test results.

Now single again so back to condoms again now xx

I remember a while qago seeing a prgramm about HIV, and people attitude towards it. They inter_iewed several people, one was a woman early twenties, She hated takning her medicine and didn't tell the person who infected her. She added that she wouldn't tell anyone she slept with that she had the virus either.

I don't have a stat for heterosexual vaginal only sex. People often lie about what they do. In heterosexual situations women are more vulnerable than men. Shaving and waxing and eating crisps or other abrasive foods all increase your risk a little.

You increase your risks but I have met young women who became infected on their first sexual encounter. It's rather like pregnancy, the act exposes you the risk the best you can do it mitigate that risk. Given that we on Fab have all made the choice to have sex we are at risk.

It's been a while since I worked in the sexual health world so I don't keep up with the statistics in the same way. I will try and remember to ask next time I see the people still working in that world.

Here are some of the recent statistics:

Sourcr: Terrence Higgins Trust. The National AIDS Trust.... Both show the same statistics.

That 24% is people who haven't been "tested" for HIV but have had a sample used for part of the national unlinked anonymous testing to give an idea of the prevalence of HIV and what resources need to be devoted to combating it.

Leftover blood from Antenatal and GUM clinic blood tests, when a HIV test hasn't been requested, is anonymised and irreversibly unlinked from the source clinic and is then tested for HIV.

Why are people advertising they are disiease free when this in reality can never be guaranteed... unless of course they never had sex with anybody since their last test...

Friend of mine.

Worked away slept with a girl. Came home. Within a year he started to get ill. Young family beautiful wife.

Tested for croms and colitice. Went through about two years of being really ill. We almost lost him. Done all the tests. Couldnt find what was up.

Finally his wife demanded that all tests were done. Came back HIV+. Destroyed his life and marriage. Wife divorced him. Luckily she tested negative.

Now with the correct drugs he's living an almost normal life. Back at work and remarried.

Life does go on with HIV but we must practice safe sex with people we do not no properly.

We will all die, and I have heard the expression, " she was to die for " or " he was to die for".

if you are not in a monogamous relationship your risk of catching a STD or HIV must be sky high, a test is no guarantee that someone is safe, and remember on a swinging site, lots of people have maybe 50 partners in a year, some more some less,

So you are sleeping with many thousand people, just by having sex once a month..scary

It takes 3 months for some conditions to incubate, including AIDS - so to say you are clean you have to have been tested AND not had sex for 3 months since! You can never say you are truly safe therefore....."
Its all very high risk sex with people you don't know and the stories in the Sunday papers about AIDS some are really bad at times its worrying it really is.

I agree with the sentiment of the post and safe sex is the way to play not just to reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs.

However it must be through knowledge not fear. The 96000 seems massive but is only 1.3% of the total population. A bigger % of the sexually active population. The hard hitting, fear inducing campaign of the 80s did more to harm and cause people to hide and not test than it helped.

Let's be safe but responsibly informed. Suit up.

Oh and beware of statistics

For an HIV+ man to be included in the men with men they first have to admit having sex with men. It may well be that these particular figures are skewed. There is no reason why we shouldn't in fact think that group is bigger.

It should be 1 in 20 men who admitted to having sex with a man was + but the total size of the group having m:m sex can only be considerably bigger. Think how many straight guys on here will be situationally bi.

Society still loves to blame a minority. Rarely is attention drawn to the fact that condom usage or non penetrative sex is far more the cultural norm in Gay communities than straight.

Also no mention is made of other routes of infection. Eg used needles.

Don't absorb information, understand it.

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

The current UK population is 63 million. As a function of total population, this means 0.15% of the population.

Let us assume 20% of the population is too young, and a further 20% is not having intercourse. That would then make the percentage 0.25% of what could be _iewed as 60% of the population who are assumed sexually active.

Those figures are very likely correct.

Although the alarmist,and liars will work the statistics to suit themselves.

It's important to play safe,but apparently less important to be honest.

People playing with the figures,lose credibility,and are soon seen as a source of misinformation.

organisations such as the Terence Higgins trust,should at the very least be scrupulously honest,instead of giving out information with intention of alarming,and panicking people.

many of whom,are already in a desperate situation.

I am no expert, but people receiving treatment, and others who are hiv positive, may not all be as openly putting it about with others as we may think.

There are trials underway too, where people who are negative are receiving drug treatments, and let's hope that all who have the illness, and future generations, get improvements to their health and eventually we get a cure etc.

A close friend of mine is currently in a similar situation... His future isn't looking very bright.

His wife tested negative but is determined to stand by him. Despite being pregnant!

A silly mistake 10+ years ago! one night of passion. Was only diagnosed last week... It's likely it's too late for treatment to have any effect.

Play safe people... It's just not worth it!
