Age check - the wrong end!

So the other day R&I went into the pharmacy to get some pills. Go to the counter and ask for it, the pharmacist says, how old are you? I'm taken aback as I've had this medication before and never been asked, so I stammer my age, followed by DOB, she waves to dismiss the need for details as she skips to fetch the meds. While paying I'm getting more and more perplexed so I ask, what's the age limit for this? She says... 60! We walk out, I can't stop laughing and R is offended on my behalf, which makes me laugh more.

But now, delayed reaction, it's weirding me out. I'm over a decade off 60, what did it? Was it the grey streaks, the glasses, the handknit cardigan?? Do I need to ... do something??? Should I try to cling to my fast fading traces of youth or should I start leaning into my emerging grandma vibe!

Its probably a recently introduced requirement to ask even if someone doesn't look that age. Or she was being a bit over the top. I was regularly asked if I could be pregnant before certain medical procedures until my early sixties. I laughed once and asked why, apparently they have to ask up to age 62

It’s just a duty of care to ask, especially if the dispenser is unsure. You can’t make these assumptions if it could (potentially) upset or harm someone.

It’s a bit like me having to do a pregnancy test before a hospital appointment even tho I don’t have a uterus ticking boxes!

When I had an x-ray, they were really funny about asking about my pregnancy status. Like a wheelchair user couldn't possibly be pregnant......

I was recently asked if I had to pay when picking up a prescription. I said no..

'What's your exemption?'

I'm over 60

Wouldn't believe me and actually rang the surgery to confirm it wasn't an error...I suppose I should consider it a compliment.

Wow! This one takes the buscuit!

This is really interesting about procedure... I've been receiving treatment and the clinicians will repeatedly ask name, DOB and address even though they know full well who you are. Stakes are high and protocol is there to ensure accuracy, I get that! So wondering if the slapdash nature of this check is what soured me. For example, demi mentioned the dispenser needs to ask if they are in doubt, but why were they in doubt, did they visually check and assess before asking? The medication itself is available over the counter and is nothing dangerous, unless you have heart, kidney or liver problems - but she didn't ask me about those

R is sensitive on this because every few months he will be asked for ID while buying alcohol... he is over 40 with bold grey streaks in his beard!

I'll say thought that the area is rather well off and there are lots of very fit, youthful older people around. Perhaps people are confused about what 50, 60, 70 looks like. I certainly have more wrinkles, bags and jowls than a 60yo with cosmetic work.

May I now redirect you to the "is age just a number" thread!
