My 20 fave 80's bands you say?

I was a teenager in the 1980's and these are my fave 80's bands (not acts, or songs, or singles or albums - all would be different to these..)

Lasting this whole decade wasn't easy for any band, and I can't really find a favourite apart from maybe The Mekons (but who has heard of them??)

(in no particular order mostly)

° The Mekons

(punk never-dies invented modern 'alt-county' in 1985 with solid albums all the way)

° New Order

(British prog with new beats)

° The Robert Cray Band

(world's greatest blues band)

° Motorhead

(never let up and refused to die (and better than ZZ Top!))

° Talking Heads

(almost made it fully through)

° The Clash... Public Enemy

(had the politics, one made it big after the other split)

° Husker Du

(US punks who lasted the whole decade without compromising like the Ramones - who were great in the 80's anyway)

° Kid Creole and the Coconuts

(clever pop, his finest decade)

° The Neville Brothers

(New Orleans funk soul survivors)

° Ladysmith Black Mambazo

(they made a lot do solid albums - no African novelty group here)

° Plastic People of the Universe

(heavy experimental Czech band that became Pulnoc)

° Los Lobos

(Latin rhythm like an earlier smoother Pixies (who released great 80's stuff years later btw))

° The Go Betweens

(a really good Australian Band with 80's sound)

° The Smiths

(didn't make it al the way through but deserve a mention obviously - I was a bit more a Wedding Present fan at the time myself.)

° Pet Shop Boys

(not quite 'all-decade' but deserve a mention too)

° REM

(not my fave personally, but ditto The Smiths and The Pet Shop Boys - this time just in terms of plain influence. Would rather play some 80's Rolling Stones though myself.. and have been recently.)

Really enjoyed this one, I always listen to the music on these threads.

ABC did a lot of good stuff, but it's not fair to mention solo acts!!

Solo too opens it way up for me (artists like Prince etc).

UB40 did really good stuff all the way through the 80's (before going plop imo) I forgot all about them - they'd have definitely made my list.

Loved Madness, but their best album is 1979 I think. I have a couple of their greatest hits though.

Good call. I wasn't really thinking reggae when I did my own list, but 'Culture' were a really good 80's band too (not just Culture Club and UB40)... and Burning Spear for that matter.

I loved ska music too as a kid (The Specials, Madness, Beat and Selecter) it just phased out so early sadly (I think rap and hip hop took over). The Police Greatest Hits has some good ('White' lol) reggae beats too.

I still love the Bangles first album too, it has a fantastic production.

Well, you say group not artist and best is subjective so it's fair to say album sales can count as popular, Dire Straits Brothers In Arms is the highest selling album by a group in the 80s.

Best 80’s band? Well it’s not any of the bands that perform at the awful 80’s Rewind Festivals. Those things are an insult to the 80’s

Worthing

AC/DC bounced back from Bon Scotts death in 1980 to become one of the biggest bands in the world. Back in Black was a huge seller (topping most of the bands above with that release alone).

Duran Duran still after 40+ years making quality music.

Check out their new single that dropped yesterday 'Black Moonlight' co written with Nile Rogers, very very funky and dancey. A true return to the 80's ??

The Bangles, simply because Susannah Hoffs would let a sly fart out while performing and blame it on other band members by looking from side to side in their direction, pure genius.
