The first one I agree. You can still listen to the music. What food has stopped since the 80s?

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and rose tint is one hell of a colour.

People didn't care about each other all that much more than they do now. Conflict and controversy was still strong back then.

There was little care for those that are different, so much less care than there is no in that regard. Different sexuality, race, even those with different hobbies and interests were bullied and picked on by adults no less.

I don't think people caring for each other stopped in 1990, not in my experience anyway.

Couldn't agree more. But because we didn't have instant global communication we didn't have access to the world's lack of care like we do now.

Fair point looking at it from racism, bigotry, homophobia pov I guess. We were definitely less accepting of those that were in the margins.

Hm.

I am tempted to say I miss everything- the music, the food, the toys, the cartoons, not the clothes because parents wouldn’t buy

But I don’t miss all the drama at home, the crying, the hysterical episodes, the suicidal mother…

Love revisiting the 80s in my mind but they’re ok where they are. In the past.

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

Communities were closer. Now neighbours hardly know each other, people don't use the local shops they get it all online.Only the locals are in the local pub and only locals get involved in the community. In the 80's people who had just moved into the area got involved. You didn't need an organised neighborhood watch for everyone to look out for each other.

Pre-mobile phones and the long summer holidays off school - never needing to arrange to meet friends because you always knew where they’d be and everyone was in walking distance. So you’d turn up at your mates house or wherever, and work your way round town picking up more friends en route until you got to the destination house, where there’d usually be a house party because someone’s parents had gone on holiday. Happy days.

You must have lived through a very different 80's to me because caring for each other??

Can I just say one word.

THATCHER

What a shit tip basket case this country would be without her.Michael Foot? Really? Kinnock? The socialist Republic of Utopia where everything is nationalised and nothing works.

What you mean like the amazing condition the country is in now ?

The crazy thing is is that the 80's were when people 'officially' started to put themselves before others!

The age of Thatcherism (the modern British Catholicism), that never-leaving guilt over non-conformity, "Greed is Good", Trump Towers, endless privatisation (selling off everything the parents of those people fought for, from council houses to care homes to our utilities and technological infrastructure), the age of 'product' for it's own sake and marketing pretty much anything for the sake of sales (music albums being knocked out with anything as filler for example), the age of green Armani suits and fashion label fascism in schools, money, money, money... the nuclear family before the extended family (nuclear family and nuclear power over anything alternative), terrible wages, higher purchase, boom-bust-boom-bust, competition obsession, the rat race, survival of the fittest, the arms race, de-funding of all the arts (and our world class cinema industry even) because creativity is seen as threatening, the idea society "doesn't exist" because we all have to move where the work is and then move again and again. Jobs that would cynically move us around. The elderly being seen as in the way....

Yet, yet... when it comes to genuinely caring (especially for the people who are clearly caring - 'snowflakes' and 'the woke' etc are so deeply hated) - how has it somehow got worse?? How is it even possible?

Gigs without mobile phones and everyone just enjoying the moment rather than capturing their selfie.

Oh and rewinding vids to return them to Blockbuster

Being carefree from the age of 0-3. Then we hit the 90's and that's when shit got real.

I absolutely detest the people that watch the entire gig through their mobile phone screen. You pay so much money for a lot of gigs these days. A lot of people really have lost the ability to just enjoy the experience without worrying about showing off the fact that they were at a gig on social media.

It was a time when you hardly ever heard of young people ever being stabbed to death in broad daylight. Police used to be on patrol and were an actual deterrent.

Shoplifters used to be prosecuted so people thought twice about helping themselves and walking out, free of any retribution.

You could catch a train to london without it costing the same as a flight to greece.

People used to have actual friends and interact with each other in person.
