So if your tuppence was worth tuppence in old money back in the day. With the change to decimalisation and inflation. What is a tuppence worth in 2023

Well if it was still in circulation it would be worth 2 pence. As coinage works on face value, which is why gold sovereigns are desirable investments for some.

So it's base metal value or perhaps more to a collector?

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

Pre decimal coins are not worth pre decimal face, they are worth decimal face.A shilling (12 pence) is 10 pence decimal.Sixpence is 2.5 pence.80 threepences = 1 decimal pound.A sovereign (1 pound pre decimal) is however 1 pound decimal, but £350 gold (bullion) value.A white fiver (£5 note pre decimal is £5 decimal if it's absolutely knackered but £30 upwards depending on condition, into three figures.Straightforward mathematical conversions don't really work for figuring out how much X is in today's money because for one thing it doesn't take into account inflation. It is more accurate to look at the spending power of a coin back then, what would it buy you.At the time of Jack the Ripper (1888) two pence would get you a "tupenny upright",a standing shag down a back alley with an aged pr0stitute probably suffering from incurable syphilis. You could get enough food to stop being hungry, enough alcohol to be merry,a shared room for the night in a "doss house".One of the Rippers victims had earned a couple of pennies but spent them in the pub,got pissed up and went back out to earn her "doss money" when she encountered Jack.So is two pence back then equal to the cost of getting pissed up today? Equal to a night in a budget hotel? Equal to a Subway/McDonald's?

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

Shilling = 5p decimal.my mistake. Two pence pre decimal is worth less than two pence decimal.Three pence pre decimal is 1.25 pence decimal.

But RTG, you are Scottish. That's three pounds more than I would expect in your pocket.
