"Well, there's already rules and laws that can be enforced, but are not. So I can't see new legislation making a blind bit of difference. " Exactly, thats how it seems near me. So many breaking road laws. New laws won't affect anything unless they can be enforced. Is they a hidden "extra" here; that to enfore these laws in residential areas, we need yet more cameras, more AI monitoring ... is this a good thing, or just steps closer to Big Brother???

"It's perfectly acceptable for people to be held responsible for their actions, but the hatred of cyclists by some drivers is just ridiculous... the reality is that car drivers break many times more laws & cause many times more injuries than all other road users combined... The group that are most at risk of being injured by a cyclists is the pedestrians, but even on the footpath there are more pedestrians injured by cars than cycles. Cal" That's the cyclists response, car drivers do this ,car drivers do that, there are more bad drivers, drivers are just as dangerous blah blah blah blah.In other words bad drivers excuse bad cyclists. What is ridiculous about someone pointing out some cyclists are dangerous?come on tell me.I have Seen cyclists riding a bike in a way that would get them fined, points, banned even jailed if they drove a car that way. What is ridiculous about calling out behaviour that can get people killed or injured?Cyclist goes through a red light at roadworks into oncoming traffic, first car is a learner who panics and swerves into roadworks nearly hitting the road crew.Cyclist (in lycra fancy dress, not some civvy going to work) carries on totally oblivious. One of many many near serious accidents I have seen caused by cyclists. So because car drivers break more laws and do this and that and blah we don't hold idiots on two wheels accountable? That,is truly ridiculous. Not wanting to get killed or injured because some twat(or group of) is to stupid, lazy ,selfish to take their share of responsibility for the safety of other road users is ridiculous?

Firstly, a cyclist CAN be fined for traffic offenses, have their driving license endorsed (if they have one), and even be jailed for "driving offenses" if applicable. Just like other road users though they can only be stopped if there's a police car about. I also agree that we have all seen some really bad cyclists doing really bad things, but no driver can "honestly" say that they don't see many times more really bad drivers. As someone who drives a Car, a van, rides a motorcycle and rides a pushbike: The bit that is ridiculous is: The group that are the worst offenders on the roads (and pavements) insisting that the groups who are doing the least damage are held to account. I have seen cyclists ride in a terrible way, many of whom seem to have a death wish, but I still think car drivers who drive that way are of much more concern. Yes "EVERYONE" should be accountable for their actions, but if there's any targeted action required, it is undoubtedly car drivers who need targeting first. On the subject of "Red Lights": Do you know that most traffic lights that are triggered by sensors, don't detect cyclists. I have stood at a junction for ages watching the lights change for cars going the other way but staying on RED for me... until a car or van comes up behind me. The messages that this sends is that "if these lights don't change for me, then they must not be expecting to stop me either". I "Will Not" wait at an empty junction for a car to come so I can proceed, and I would be happy to fight that corner in court. That doesn't mean that I will ride through red lights at busy junctions, only clear ones where the lights won't change for me. Finally... if you want cyclists to be a responsible road users, then get other road users to treat them like a responsible road user. Give them space, allow them to go when it's their right of way, don't pass them & then immediately stop or turn in front of them, and don't expect them to get out of your way "because you pay road tax"... Ultimately the MAIN reason that other road users "HATE" cyclists is because they cause you to SLOW DOWN for a few seconds. Cal

"From what a friend said a long time ago, Germany seem to have it right, everyone over there has to have private insurance, Much like car insurance but without the car, so if you walk into someone and accidentally knock them over and they sustain injuries, that cause them to lose income etc they can claim on your insurance, or if you are a cyclist and cause an accident or injure someone, they can claim on your insurance. As it stands now cyclists over here cause plenty of accidents, injure themselves and other parties, cause damage to property etc but are completely free of any liability outside of a personal small claims court kind of deal which no one will ever do. And yet if a vehicle causes and accident with a cyclist they can claim for damage to their property, lost income, injuries etc etc. very one sided considering some of the worst behaviour I’ve ever seen on the road is cyclists. And for any of the Lycra brigade in here, you get given a bad name by the minority I’m sure, the idiots who hop onto pavements to avoid traffic lights, or just completely ignore the red lights and charge through anyway, or ignore the empty multimillion pound cycle lane or cycle route marked out and ride in the middle of the road anyway which I can only assume is an act to deliberately piss off the drivers behind you" This all day long. Cyclists should have to display a registration plate and have insurance.

They slow my journey down all the time by their actions. The opening poster must be one - in fact, he’s so proud of the fact, he is showing off his walking equipment. "Imo cyclists like proper cyclists will have insurance in a certain way I am insured through British Triathlon I pay Approximately £80 a year which covers all aspects. Difference for me is cyclists are cyclists then you get just people on bikes and it’s mainly then who cause the problems. I am into off road cycling and I commute to work a few days a week as well so I gladly pay my Insurance and it covers me for any events I do as well. " Anyone who has home & contents insurance has Public Liability cover. Mine gives me £5m of cover. The reason drivers are legally required to hold cover is because of the massive risk of causing damage in an order of magnitude that would otherwise bankrupt them. When cycles can cause the same amount of physical damage that a car can, then maybe it will become a legal requirement. Til then it's just a whine from the cycle hating muppets.

'Road Tax' hasnt been ringfenced for highways maintenance since 1937. Roads are funded from Council Tax & general taxation, & VED doesnt even begin to cover the cost to the exchequer of highways maintainance.

"I agree with some above - road tax does definitely not exist. We have a couple of classic cars, one has a V12 engine and the other has a V8. We can drive them around our property without any problem, but the second we take them out onto the road we have to pay money to the government, but it's definitely not road tax Bess x" How old are your classics, they could qualify for exemption

However, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are most at risk of death and serious injury, regardless of how sensible they are. This seems to be due not just to simple bad driving but also selfishness and a genuine and unfathomable hatred of those on 2 wheels by those in cars, vans and lorries. That’s correct I’m breathing fresh air and not paying for the privilege So again bring in VED and harsh fines for cyclists ...Breathing fresh air as your (not a bike) spits out toxic gases? - You are also a hypocrite. I could go on, but what's the point... I'd get more sense out of a wall. And said wall would probably be more interested fella Well evidently not because you keep replying hen. x Firstly I’m replying because I am enjoying what I’m enjoying but thanks for pointing out my spellchecking I appreciate it but I won’t correct it for a dimwit woke………… And my offspring need not come into this and you people wow, from a MAN such as yourself that’s bold. Anyway cyclists suck, and I am happy with who and how I am " The only thing you got right is that I'm a man. Well done... Hen.

"The continentals always seem to use pushbikes a lot. Especially the Holland's and French. Was it the Europeans bringing their culture here in the Common Market era. Is the EU to blame? I genuinely don’t care who introduced anything associated with cyclists I’m not a fan, whatsoever, of cyclists " That's pretty evident!

"As a cyclist, who commutes on my bike and recreationally, I follow the laws of the road as I would in a car. I also have started cycling with a camera on my bike, because I've had too many close calls with drivers just doing what they want on the road, running red lights, speeding, pulling U turns when it's not allowed. The amount of drivers who shouldn't be on the road. Yeah I see some people acting like idiots on bikes, usually it's meat heads who ride with no helmets and the like. The police should really focus on taking the actual danger off the roads with the fucking awful drivers. On average nearly 300 pedestrians are killed by drivers a year, where as only 3 on average are killed by cyclists. 80% of all casualties on the road are caused by cars/drivers. Also, I have insurance on my bike, because I don't wanna be out of pocket when a tosser who shouldn't be behind a wheel inevitably hits me. " Unfortunately, the police need to be there to see things happen. The police are not to blame, there are just not even close to being enough of them. I too have insurance, and cameras too. Unfortunately there's no point in reporting the near misses as there isn't enough resource available to even have a chat with bad drivers. What would be nice is to get rid of the "them and us" mindset. 90% of drivers I encounter are great, but the 10% think that cycles shouldn't be on the road, and should get out of their way. Personally, I just want a bit of space and patience... exactly the same as when I'm driving. Cal

And hatred of others stems from a hatred of ourselves. I sincerely hope you will engage your brain more... Maybe even start trying to resolve all of the contradictory thoughts that must constantly swim around in it.

And for any of the Lycra brigade in here, you get given a bad name by the minority I’m sure, the idiots who hop onto pavements to avoid traffic lights, or just completely ignore the red lights and charge through anyway, or ignore the empty multimillion pound cycle lane or cycle route marked out and ride in the middle of the road anyway which I can only assume is an act to deliberately piss off the drivers behind you" Why would you assume they (ok, we) only want to piss off drivers? There are many situations where the middle of the road is safer. Potholes, which we may have seen or expect, the driver not; or to overtake a slower cyclist; or because we know that particular section of road a narrow and a driver overtaking would be dangerous. Unfortunately they often try anyway, almost causing an accident.

Unfortunately they often try anyway, almost causing an accident. " The law says that cyclists should ride "at least 1m away" from the kerb, but most cycle lanes are not even 1m wide. On my normal ride to work, about half of the route has a cycle lane, I will generally encounter 2 or 3 cars parked in the cycle lanes. There are also a number of locations where the road bends, and 80% of cars "take the apex" like they're in a race... cutting across the cycle lane. At junctions, there is no cycle lane marked through the junction, and again MOST cars will move completely left to the kerb, leaving zero space for me. Then there's the "advanced stop line", that zone at a junction with a picture of a car in it... there's nearly always a car in there when I get to the lights. The whole point of that zone is so bikes can be visible to stop people turning into them at the junction. If they want cyclists to use the bike lanes, then make sure that they can. Cal

"Let’s add in another menace on the roads - pedestrians. Always walking about, crossing the road, not paying any road tax or having insurance. Some of them even walk two abreast. They slow my journey down all the time by their actions. The opening poster must be one - in fact, he’s so proud of the fact, he is showing off his walking equipment. These people should be held accountable. All day long, they should be made to wear a Number Plate... especially all those guys in their adidas tracksuits running around at high speed with zero concern for car drivers Don’t get me started on them - some of them are knocked over by our magnificent drivers in this country (so much better than the drivers in the hated EU where they won’t even drive on the correct side of the road) and leave dents in their beautiful vehicles. Something must be done " I went abroad once. Absolute nightmare! Every single driver except me was on the wrong side of the road!

"MPs planning to close a gap in legislation to stop those on two wheels who effectively flout the safety of others and only cc are about themselves. What's going on here guys. It's all over the news " A very good idea but completely pointless. There are no requirement for identification on bikes so unless you catch them in the act which is unlikely, they won't be punished. It will make very little difference. Just like the laws on scrabbler bikes and quad bikes, they illegally ride all over the place and literally a handful have been caught.
