Im watching Michel Roux’s French Country Cooking. Hes made some dish and embellished it with things hes foraged from the garden.

It got me wondering how does one go about foraging? What are the rules?

Can you forage? Whats the best or worst thing you’ve picked?

Rule number 1.. don’t eat anything that will make you ill or kill you

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’m not a forager personally but would recommend that it is intrinsic to get a book identifying fungi if you so choose to include it in your outdoor ingredient hunting

For many thousands of years early humans gathered from the Forrest's and meadows Hunted wild animals and probably far healthier than us.

North Bucks

BlackBerrys and Elderflower cordial and Elder champagne is about all I can muster.

I did look for wild garlic when it was about but never found any. I probably trampled all over it to be fair.

Truffles now they would be magnificent to find.

"Is it foraging when it's in your own garden?"

I was wondering that. Is it theft when its not your garden though…?? What are the limits?

I *think* you're allowed to pick any wild plant by law (unless it's protected).

I may have made that up to justify all the blackberries though.

Berries are about the only thing I've ever trusted myself to pick. Don't really fancy having my stomach pumped after making a nice wild mushroom risotto.

The first rule of foraging is 'don't talk about foraging'.

2nd rule is don't eat berries that are at waist height straight from the plant. Dog piss all over it. My mum told me that.

You only make that mistake once though.

Foraging is cool it's all about keeping your eyes open when out and about there's some excellent online resources to make sure you don't eat something that might make you ill ?? Totally agree with the pick berries above waist height advice too because of dogs and foxes ??

If it’s maize you want a self propelled with a Kemper style header, probably about an 8 row and make sure you’ve got a cracker in, you’ll get too many whole grains going through if you don’t
