It's really hard to compare one artistic talent to another, and there are certain some great names mentioned in the thread.

Neil Peart must be amongst the most skillful, but there are some great artists who only other drummers will have heard of. Thomas Lang, Jojo Mayer, Benny Greb, Cindy Blackman, Mike Mangini, Dave Weckle, Evelyne Glennie ... all unbelievable. and there's dozens more.

The big names like Keith Moon & John Bonham, but in reality they wouldn't compare to the current "best" drummers.

The quote actually came from a BBC comedy called Radio Active on 1981... and Ringo is actually a really good drummer. His playing was tasteful, interesting, and just right for the song.

I fully agree about Meg White. And about critics of such as Ringo and Charlie Watts and the like for being too basic or simplistic or whatever. Its astounding the amount of covers bands I've both home and abroad that struggle to play these drummers' parts correctly and for the whole song!

I agree, and many of the current drummers wouldn't be even playing if it wasn't for the greats of the past, but there's definitely a massive progress from there. The same argument can obviously be made that Bonham wouldn't have been doing what he was doing if it wasn't for drummers like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, but also guys like Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Mitch Michelle were amongst the drummers who had obviously influenced Bonham... and one of his "signature" grooves is an obvious progression from the Great Bernard Purdi's famous half time shuffle.

Some songs the drums really make it. One of those is Basket Case by Green Day. I wouldn’t say Tré Cool is the best drummer in the world but that song really stands out for the drumming.

For me it has to be Rick Allen of Def Leppard . They are my all time favourite group ,and from my home city .But after losing his arm in a car crash in 1984 ,he had to learn to drum with his feet ,and one remaining arm ,and went on to have unbelievable success with Leppard.

The fact he overcame his injuries is remarkable in itself ,but then learning to drum again using his feet is beyond belief.

Steve White a great drummer and lovely guy. My son had some lessons with him and was in a competition he judged. His Sky series The Art of Drumming was fantastic and worth a watch for any drum fans - actually music fans more generally.

If only he could have formed a group with Django Reinhardt- that would have been rather interesting to hear and made an awesome movie!
