"Sorry, ignore my wry smile at some of these - often not exactly correct - answers to this post... The internet was invented in the USA Bingo originated in Italy, as did the telephone (Bell did patent it though so that's the confusion) Yorkshire Puddings originated in France BUT the recipe was 1st published in Yorkshire (so us White Roses will claim that haha) Pot Noodles are from Japan. But the English worded trade name was invented in Wales The Chinese invented toothbrushes -but a Brit did pioneer what we think of as the modern version, albeit made of bone and pig's hair! Brit Humphrey Davy demonstrated that arc light was possible but it was American Eddison who shall we say perfected the light bulb. Its still a bone of contention that one! Others like Swan lay claim to it too. Karl Benz invented the car. Yes, in Germany. Kettles were used in ancient Mesopotamia Frenchman Pascal invented the calculator but I think it was a Spaniard perfected the digital one that USA's Texas Instruments made. An American invented the vacuum cleaner but the 1st ones were made in Britain. All good fun! But it has to be said Britain has invented a hell of a lot over the years!!! PS - I had to set an Xmas Quiz on all this so that's why I know! LOL . " One or two of your quibbles are touch pedantic even so! The Lightbulb was called out as contentious (I think I called it electric lighting). The internet I called 'hypertext' - and that was invented by a Brit (per the thread criteria) - Tim Berners Lee of course - I could have said HTML or the WWW but kept it simple. The Kettle - OK I should have said 'Electric'. I only used it to end my list humourously and invoke tea. You can't deny electric kettles have got around too! The Calculator - I couldn't remember what was unique about Clive Sinclair's - but something was. Maybe I should have checked what it was though (I wanted to say the ZX80, but that was too loose really). RE the vacuum cleaner - the whole idea/manufacture (ie a different matter) issue is often debated in this area. Again it was humourous though really to end the list! (the rest of the list was chronological). Pot Noodle - I thought that was someone's joke anyway(!) I think people have done pretty well! Another good list is what *came* to the UK. pt

"The Industrial revolution. This little island dominated world culture. mostly by destroying other cultures but whatever.." I'm not sure it expressly dominated other cultures, or destroyed them either - in most cases anyway (sure there are exceptions, and there was always the role of religion too.). Britain itself became multicultural in the fullest sense, and from the outset too. The BE did often rule with too-heavy a hand though, but the idea was to civilise, industrialise and trade with via conquering with various different techniques. It certainly spread the English language around. I'm not into empire-building at all, I just think weren't any worse than any other (including I imagine the Scottish if they'd eventually got the Dutch model they were interested in going). pt
