Good morning all :--)

Does anyone have trouble drawing sufficient blood re STI home test kits?

Are walk-in-clinics still available or are they becoming a thing of the past (particularly where there are no symptoms, routine stuff?

I work away from home, so can't always do the home kit within the time frame.

Back in the day the walk-in-clinic situation seemed tons more straightforward compared to 2023!!

No option locally for the walk in clinic since covid. They only allow appointments if you have symptoms.

As for the home test kits? They're great for convenience but yes, I end up spending an age trying to get blood out and invariably end up with bruised fingers for days.

Would be easier to just smash myself in the face with a wok and let the blood pour from my broken nose.......

I always do the blood test after a shower/bath, so I'm nice and warm, hold your arm/hand down by the side of body for a little while and then gently massage the tip (oo er)

Hydration is key, drink plenty and heat helps.. A hot shower right before you do the blood draw works for me.

As for walk ins I'm not sure, home kits are easier for me personally

"Do yous test because yous don't use condoms ?"

You know things can be passed on by activities other than penetrative sex?

And that condoms aren't infallible?

Sound advice, have tried this method unsuccessfully.

Will hopefully jump through the hoops and get it sorted tout-de-suite

Best advice I can give for the home collection kits:

Make sure you're well hydrated beforehand and are in a warm place

Put your hand in a bowl of hot water for about 5 minutes

Dry your hand off and do some wrist circles and jazz hand type movements to make sure you've good blood flow

Stand up with your arm as straight as you can get it, at least straight from the elbow when your finger is over the collection vial

Use the lancet, and wipe away the first drop of blood

Massage with the thumb of your non-collection hand, from your wrist across your palm down the finger you're collecting from to encourage blood droplets to form

If blood flow slows, wipe away the clot which is forming and flow should improve again. Keep massaging.

Hope this helps - I know it's currently chaos trying to get a face to face so the postal kits are the best option if you can work with them.

Never get enough blood for a home kit. Couldn't order another one online. Managed to get an appointment for today. They did bloods but had to do self swab.

My local service doesn't offer walk ins anymore. Definitely think they should re think that.

Curiousscouser's advice is brilliant - last time I did it a lover ended up doing it for me because I'm prone to getting very bruised fingertips.

Something that's not well known - if you text them asking for additional lancets they're more than happy to provide them.

Some near us have started doing walk in sessions again but it's only certain days and times. Another option may be do what I did recently, go into the clinic, collect a self test, then use the toilet to take swabs (you have to self swab anyway at purs even if you have an appointment), then send it off.

Can't help with the finger prick sorry, only pricked mine once at it looked lime a murder scene the amount of blood xx

Google it.

How or where is everyone ordering kits from. The sh:24 site is a nightmare no matter what time of day or night I try to order one they say they are all out of stock. If you tick the box to say you have symptoms (I dont) then they say go see the doc. I think we do still have limited walk in service here or bookable appointments, a lot less than pre covid so maybe thats why they wont let us order hometesting. Is everyone just paying for them?

I had a problem with drawing blood once and pretty much used every finger. Then I tried it after going to gym and having a shower having drank a lot of water and pretty much couldn't get it to stop! Try a bit of light exercise beforehand and staying hydrated

I sometimes think if someone caught ebola, typhoid, leprosy, small pox, SARS or even anthrax They would hold Court on Social Media boasting about it.

If the caught chlamydia they would hide in the shadows. All STIs, IF TREATED, are less harmful than a lot if other diseases but the stigma persists. Get tested, get cured. Don't trust condoms.

If I try order online it says I can't as had my limit of tests, so I have to ri g and the guy there over rides it so I can collect one. Worth ringing your local clinic and seeing what they say x

I have to prick my fingers every day to check my blood sugars so when needed for testing it’s not a problem usually. Just make sure I’m hydrated and hands are warm

A lot of STIs have no treatment or certainly no curative treatment. Or, treatments are becoming less and less effective due to resistance etc.

All the advice tef drawing blood is great. If that doesn't work, try your earlobe. Tends to bleed more freely than fingertip I find.
