As humans we all have something that initially piques our interest in someone else. Many times, it’s something visual.

For me, I can’t be into someone based wholly on their physical appearance. That may initially intrigue me, but I need more beyond good looks to take interest.

I look at preferences as the things that make me sort out whether someone is for me or not. I can still find someone attractive and not want to share my body with them. Equally, I recognise I cannot be everyone’s cup of tea either. Shallow would be to deem everyone suitable. If you have no rubric, by which to sort out others, then your connections are likely shallow or at least hollow as you’d likely only be seeking to selfishly fulfil your need without any thoughts to how you connect with anyone else or share mutually in pleasure . Very much a hole is there to fill mentality.

Having tastes isn't shallow, it's taking an interest in the world. Having no tastes - not caring in the slightest what sort of person you sleep with - would be the shallow option.

It's not shallow to like only certain things especially aesthetically speaking.

You might be missing out if your "wants" narrow the audience too much but not really shallow

I don’t think it’s shallow at all- you can’t be attracted to every single person.

I've said this on other threads, because I firmly believe this, if you feel any judgement or pressure about your sexual preferences which influences your decision who to fuck, then a significant part of consent has been taken away from you.

I don't believe it is shallow at all. Although I do believe that forming a strong image of a type can blinker us.

My wife of 18 years, whom I loved deeply, was completely different to anyone I'd ever met. There's no way I would have considered her my type before we met. Or indeed my gf before her.

I have a type in the sense that sometimes there's something special there between us, where everything else feels like detail. Nothing is complex when we are together.

If I knew what the formula was for that I wouldn't be here at all. I suspect it has little to do with appearance though.
