"A swan in Kent which is the county called the food basket of England has been killed by a dog attack. The second in three days. What is surprising here is that the dog was actually on one of those detractable leads. The type with metres and meters of lead where the owner has some sort of handle. Should these long leads be banned? What's going on here. It's all over the news" That's sad poor Swan! I was with son yesterday at a country park he cares for autistic children and this little yorkie was of lead totally out of control it was yapping insanely all the while clinging and jumping up the poor boys leg! The owner just couldn't catch the dog! She was very apologetic! Btbf if u don't have instant recall shouldn't b of lead as for the retractable ones ( I have one for my dog) owners shd b aware of surroundings and real them in if other animals/ people nearby!it's easy to do so! "Cats kill birds all the time that's never all over the news. Why are dogs being singled out for this behaviour?" My cat keeps killing rats! Half her size! Found another dead yesterday in garden! Couldn't get her in! Last night made sure she stayed in! She's no youngster either at 14! X

"My elderly nextdoor neighbour got bitten on the leg by a rotweiller. She fell over and broke her hip. She was told she couldn't sue as the dog was on a (retractable) lead therefore under control." She absolutely can sue, leash or not. A dog can still be out of control even on a lead, as evidenced by it biting your elderly neighbour.

"Cats kill birds all the time that's never all over the news. Why are dogs being singled out for this behaviour? I've never heard of a cat killing a swan. All swans belong to our King. " Ahhhh... I thought that was irrational for a moment. Silly me, it's nothing to do with species at all, it's because they are the property of the King. Of course.

"Cats kill birds all the time that's never all over the news. Why are dogs being singled out for this behaviour?" Because a dog has the potential to be a killer to human as well as birds a dog out of control doesn't follow boundaries set in place by the pack leader which in this case should be the human. Once a dog had a taste for blood next time it may be a child or adult. To my knowledge I can't think of a person being mauled to death by a domestic cat!

In any case it is 100% the dog owners who are at fault.

"Having owned and trained Springer Spaniels for Gun work for more years than I like to think about I consider I do know a bit about Dogs To most people they want a Dog that is well behaved not aggressive but above all a good family pet/ friend. These retractable leads are the worst possible thing you can use on any breed of dog . With any dog the owner had to be the boss but with those leads the dog being in front doing pretty much anything it wants the dog becomes the boss not you. Most folk want a dog that is a pleasure to take out one you can let of a lead and when called comes back straight away a dog that walks nicely on the lead beside you or of the lead beside you . To get to that standard is very very basic and straightforward it’s not rocket science. 90% of dogs can achieve what I have said within 4/6 weeks easily . If anyone wants advice how to get a dog to that standard feel free to pvt message BUT retractable leads are awful and have no place in dog ownership " This

My sprocker (god rest his beautiful soul) could never b of lead so it gave him more freedom with me on the other end of his lead! Still use it for his sister my lab but she has good recall! (No dog can ever have 100% recall) ! X
