Mrs here.

At the grand old age of 43 I want to get my first tattoo, I have an idea in my head of what I want but not being artistic at all can't quite get on to paper. How do I go about someone designing it? Do I just find a tattoo shop and go through what I want and they'll come up with a design?

Sorry totally naive on all of this! Any advice?

Find a very reputable studio (and artist) and see what they can come up with. Having a basic design down can help, but sometimes it's good to let the artist get creative.

But definitely seek advice from the artist

Don't rush it. Find out what you like and wait for a bit. I found I went off some of the design ideas over time. Also do your research on tattoo artists. You get what you pay for x

Also this!

I'm getting my first soon, and I've passed a few ideas and an actual design I found which I'd like to be modified slightly to the artist. To see what they can come up with.

It has been a long time coming as I'm a very particular person and I need to be sure it's something I like.

Yes I get that. This is something I've been thinking about for about 3 years now but didn't know what I wanted so got my nipples pierced instead

I've just got to find the right person to bring it to life I guess

I just got my first tattoo a couple of months ago at 40 and the thing which took longest was finding an artist who I was happy did the style I wanted.

Once I found them it was a case of describing what I wanted, providing reference pictures and letting them design it.

Not getting the design until the day before the appointment was a bit nerve wracking but it isn't unusual and if you're on the same page it should only be minor points that need changing.

My daughter went to an amazing tattoo artist. Her tattoo is just beautiful. What she did is search online until she found a tattooist whose style she liked . It wasn't cheap but it's for life so worth saving up for.

That exactly what you do

However I would suggest you get on fb or Instagram and actually search tattoo artists near you, find one with a good rep who's tattoo style you like and take it from there.

Lots of tattoos artists have their own personal style and are reluctant to stray from that as they know its the style they do best

Also be open to giving your artist full creative freedom with the style/design information you give them

Be warned though they are very addictive, I got my first at 18 and never stopped, now I have 2 full sleeves, leg sleeves, both buttocks, my whole back, chest, stomach and face

Only reason I've stopped recently is because I'm trying to save for big expense

I've had two in the last few months and both mean something to me so wanted it done right. I gave the tattoo artist an idea of what I wanted and they usually give their input too. As long as you find a good one, your tattoo will reflect that.

Be willing to travel to find a tattoo artist that you feel comfortable with or you might end up with something that looks like it was done on an etch a sketch toy.
