"It's not that Africa has been shrunk, I think it remains pretty much the same ... the rest of the world has been made bigger. Something to do with what happens when you translate a spherical image on to a flat surface. Africa, which straddles the Equator, barely changes in size — meanwhile, the countries furthest from the Equator become inflated from their true sizes on this type of map introduced by a geographer and cartographer and still in use today. For those of us living in Western countries, this is an interesting dilemma to consider. This means that the sizes of European and North American countries are distorted, giving us an inaccurate mental “measuring stick” for judging the relative sizes of other countries. I can argue white supremacy is responsible for geographical things and norms we’ve come to accept. For example, why is the United States called America when The Americas stretch from the northern most point of Canada down to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina/Chile? This is a massive pet hate of mine. White supremacy and the erasure of over thirty other countries because the United States deems themselves more important and has coined America and Americans as solely theirs. In other languages, inhabitants of the USA are not called Americans. In Spanish for example, they are called ‘United States-izens’ (estadounidenses). I digress. In the context of white supremacy and the Mercator projection, I only meant conspiracy theorists have spread the idea that land size is askew because of white supremacy when it’s factually askew because of the transfer as I explained. At the same time, I’m not negating white supremacy full stop. I can argue white supremacy is responsible for geographical things and norms we’ve come to accept.
