Why are people so determined to bring up other things not currently being discussed when certain topics come up?

‘It’s also bad when xyz happens’ ‘I assume you are just as upset about abc?’ Ah shallup. I hate this tactics. Why do people do them? Why? WHY??!!!!

I'm always disappointed when people don't understand "she doesn't even go here".

Whataboutery happens a lot on here.

I don't always think it's a negative thing, sometimes it's interesting to have a different slant to an argument. It can be a good way for people to try and show sympathy? I'm not sure it's empathy. It can be a way of relating.

Sometimes it's utter tosh though.

If there are examples where the assertion doesn't hold water then it's reasonable to give them.

Can make for an interesting discussion. A bit better than oh no it isn't - oh he's it is.

Arguably, pink lingerie is more preferable.

Because some people are very concerned to get their agenda across. No matter what is being discussed, and wasn’t ever interested in anyone else but themselves, at that particular time.

But yeah it is frustrating, especially when people don’t seem to understand that just because there is a discussion happening about xyz, doesn’t mean that people aren’t aware of abc happening too? It’s just not part of the current discussion.

It's how conversations go.

Very often they will take on tangents and shift focus... whether intentional or not.

As nice as it is to stay on topic, it's impossible to expect/demand everyone talk about the thing referenced in the OP.

These things aren't fixed, they are evolving and everchanging.

Moreover, if people are using "what about" in their response to something another has said, that means it's likely to bear some relation/relevance to the topic at hand.

People aren't always the best at articulating their point and "what about" can be a way of using an example to express their opinions/thoughts or challenge the opinions/thoughts of another.

Though I too can see how it is used to muddy the waters and confound the issue.

I guess at heart... simply not giving a fuck is likely to yield the clearest of minds

They shouldn't be, but that's only done by adding context and inference to a certain topic which people don't have he nuance to do, so they say "well about this completely different thing? Checkmate atheists" and think they've proven a point.

It works both ways. Essentially it comes down to whatever benefits "my" side the most. Generally the loudest people don't like to discuss, they like to preach and won't allow anything to deviate from or challenge the preaching.

If it helps their cause they sure as shit use it themselves, but dismiss it if it doesn't.

Then it's not a discussion, it's an argument. I really enjoy when there's open discussion here. People learning new things, listening to other viewpoints. I love that. But the fixed thinkers bulldozing their way through thread after thread and often targeting individuals - they ruin it. And maybe they would say the same about me. Who knows.

Sometimes the things that irritate us in other people are aspects of ourselves that we find hard to accept.

A very wise mentor said to me: if that phrase irritates you then it may well be true. That pissed me right off

I think only the individual can know, why they feel the need for others to hear them or agree. Sometimes there's something under there and it's coming from a place of suffering or compassion, rather than pure egotism.
