Going away to think about this as need to decide on vocal chops vs frontman ability. Maybe someone who really combines the 2? I don’t think Freddie was the best Rock vocalist he was very very good but as a frontman… probably the top guy. Steve Perry was stunning vocally but not exactly a firecracker … this may need wine and youtube for clarity!!

For "singer"if you're meaning the whole "package" as in sublime vocal ability mixed with showstopping showmanship then Freddie wins every time.

If you're asking for the greatest singing rock voice though, as in power, purity, clarity and harmonic richness, then the best I have ever heard live belonged to Jeff Buckley.

Mick Jagger is the ultimate front man, no-one else comes close and at 80 he can still can sing unlike some of his contemporaries.

I also admire Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey, fantastic rock singers who held their tunes really well.

Jagger, and it’s not even close.

Even as he is now he’s a contender.

I just can't wait for the new Stones album.

Just heard the new single and I like it. It won't be the best off it I guarantee. Mercury was a brilliant act for sure but he didn't have Jagger's scope imo. He was fairly limited by the songs he had too imo.

Do you really have to bellow or ride a note forever to be a great rock singer? If you do then I'd probably go for Robert Plant or someone.

If we’re talking the lead singer as frontman, rather than singer alone (though his voice is great), I’d say Nick Cave.

Uttterly mesmerising and has the audience completely, especially when the Bad Seeds are really rocking.

Not a big Queen fan, but I get the Freddie adulation, especially for working the crowd .

Small Faces were to many the fifth great British band of the 60's (ie after The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks and The Who - I know there are people who rate them over many and sometimes even all of those, but I don't quite myself. I do like my live box set of them though, possibly more than even my Them stuff (Van Morrison is another great Rock singer when he wants to be). The Small Faces didn't produce many famous studio albums, that's the thing maybe. Only the now-cult 'Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake' really. A great band to discover for sure.

I have, there is a lot of mimicry but Plant owes far more to Janis Joplin than Marriott.

Having said that, the SFs were an absolute class act, All or Nothing is still on my top 10
