The Trust looking after the apple tree where Isaac Newton sat when he invented gravity are putting ten saplings up for auction so that the tree DNA can live on. The exact same tree is over 400 years old and must have literally produced hundreds of apples. Newton was actually buried in Westminster Abbey but recently reports of hidden manuscripts written by him may have been discovered. AOTN

I struggle to see how Isaac Newton can have invented gravity with apples, since although he lived before Johnny Appleseed, until the wonderful Johnny Appleseed came along, surely there were no apples to fall.

Besides, gravity cannot be a true construct, cos if apples in the northern hemisphere fall down towards the south, then if they have apples in Australia (and I know they have strange fruit there, but surely they have apples), then one would expect apples to fall off the earth because of gravity.

I call fake news on Isaac Newton and his so called gravity.

OP isn't very good at numbers! 1666 was 357 years ago. Apple trees drop many hundreds of apples a year, usually expressed in weight, and large apples like the Flower of Kent probably drop at around 400 a year. Multiply 400 by 357 and you get something approaching 150,000 - ie many thousands of apples!

pt thinks numbers are important. Aim low, think low, expect little is what pt says.

Also (obviously) Newton attempted to explain gravity, he didn't invent it. Although Newtonian physics in terms of gravity only explains so much.

In fairness to TTtPiperson, it’s entirely accurate to say the tree literally produced hundreds of apples.

But again it’s only part of the story, because after that it went on to produce literally thousands more.

What’s going on here? Did someone eat the buggers?
