But Denzel still stays within his comfort zone. A lot of his roles are very similar characters in terms of personality and tone (not all but most). They are all very grounded characters, some could even be picked up and dropped in to a different movie of his and it would still work.

You compare that to Gary Oldman whom has done far more above and beyond type roles, Denzel doesn't come close to that kind of range.

Even his commissioner Gordon was fine, it's not exactly a huge part. He was the best Gordon to date, but again that's not saying much since the others lacked anyway.

Even Johnny Depp has a better character range than Denzel.

Denzel is by far the better actor across the board compared to Depp, but he could not compete on any of the larger than life characters that Oldman and Depp have done.

Which is why Oldman takes the title. Amazing actor on par with Denzel but he has the range of characters which Denzel does not - or at least has not shown us to the same extent.

Comedy, serious, quirky, eccentric.

I'll slightly retract about his roles being pick up and drop in that the 4 main Denzel genres are varied and certain characters of his won't fit other genres, what I originally said does his ability a diserrvive, but still his characters are all grounded, mostly very serious and focused. Not one dimensional but certainly have very clear similar traits.

All of which he does play to perfection.

I disagree with your assessment of Denzel’s roles but I think I have him over Oldman because he’s a better actor imo. I don’t like many of the films I’ve seen Oldman in. BUT I must also confess I think my feelings on Oldman and Depp could be driven by bias and even subcxnsciously impacted by my thoughts on them beyond acting. Because you make some valid points on them.

By the way I’m not meaning to disagree with their place in this thread . I just don’t rate them

I have seen and loved Denzel in some different things but I do think roles like Malcolm X, Training Day, Flight, American Gangster, Remember the titans (which was the first film I ever saw him in), Glory etc are not as similar as sugggested here. Certainly not roles you can drop into any Denzel film imo. There’s a range there.

Amen! It was absolutely criminal how our Chuck has never received an Oscar nomination in his long and illustrious career.

His performance in the classic, Code Of Silence was simply sublime, not least of all the scene wherein he is hit across the head with a snooker ball. Chuck feigns the sensation of being dazed brilliantly - a phenomenon that Norris has and never will feel in reality of course as he is God and thus impervious to all harm…

Quite a few to pick from.

I think overall I would have to go for Robert De Niro.

I think Paul Newman in the Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and Colour of Money put in some damn fine performances though.
