If our beloved Government has its way the new Communications Bill will authorise the monitoring of all phone calls, emails and internet usage.

So what will my fellow fabstas do when this Bill becomes law? Will Fab disappear over night? Or couldn't you care less?

The bottom line in today's e-World is that terrorists are using the internet to disseminate information and set up terror cells. Our security services must move with the times if it is to combat these threats and even though I know full well that our govt is probably at the forefront of secret counter espionage using electronic means there comes a time when they hit a brick wall if they can't tap into the general internet and intercept messages.

How this Bill has come about is that is exactly what they were doing anyway but now, because of the govt's aim for transparency, it has to be publicly known that that is what they are doing/intend to do.

How come back in the days of post and the IRA this wasn't justification to steam open every letter sent via royal mail.

I do not update certain apps on my phone due to the fact they want to take pics, record video and phone calls without my permission.

I'm not doing anything illegal but that doesn't mean our every move or form of communication should be recorded just for the sake of national security.

Law abiding citizens have a right to privacy.

Its about controlling the masses.

Why does the govt want to legitimise what they're already doing and have been doing for years?

Because terrorists can use as a defence in a court of law that the govt obtained information illegally. Unfortunately, for the govt to close that loophole they have to introduce a bill to include all citizens but they know who they want to listen to, and it isn't me and you. There are much bigger fish to fry than a few swingers who like shoving their cocks in places other than their wife's pussy.

Never bothered the Government when the IRA were blowing up pubs etc in the 70/80s.

Think you will find they already have all the powers they need to tap phone line etc.

This a tough subject the right to privacy verses the right to security.

The way i understand it records of traffic will be kept .ie "who spoke to who and when " ,but the detail will only be available via a magistrate court order having just cause etc.

On the other hand many subversive groups gave up on technology years ago and now communicate person to person .

The issue of eavesdropping on the population is not a new concept,take a look at the questions raised concerning RAF Menwith Hill in parliament,an establishment run by the NSA.

I think it can work as long as the independent safeguards are in place and protected by law,being a swinger would not be just cause to open the traffic.

Lets face it if they want to know who is fucking who they only have to read the verifications ..

They've been monitoring our calls for years. That's what Menwith Hill has been doing, and the Govt are just making it public (at last!). Also, most US websites are being monitored and I don't know about you but I go on them a lot!

Computers do the laborious task of sifting through huge amounts of data. There are already huge data warehouses that contain massive super computers that read virtually all emails and monitor phone usage.

As others say, much already happens. What is wrong is that more liberty is being taken away via 'legal' means, due to such changes as this proposal. I will still be using Fab and pursuing my life via the net etc, and voting accordingly, when elections arrive, with liberty being a core part of what I expect from a decent, democratic society.

Terrorists will not use methodologies that are open to easy infiltration, and they typically have funding for better communications technology than most of us do.

My distrust does not stop with governments - the likes of social network sites, most email and internet search engines etc are all too invasive for my tastes. I use duckduckgo, instead of google, for example, as they don't track searches.
