Worm living in a brain

Tom is no fan of of Australia and this week's news sheds light.

An Australian woman with awful symptoms was admitted to hospital and had a brain scan..

Surgeons operated and found a 3 inch live worm actually living in her brain. They removed it and even the surgeon was surprised. Could this happen here. ? It's all over the news

Any parasite that uses the blood stream to travel around the body can potentially end up in the brain. If the eggs are small enough to cross the blood brain barrier its a real possibility.

The tropical disease hospital in London was on tv years ago and shared some horror stories of what people had living in their bodies after being overseas.

Yep, heard this on the news yesterday! The parasite was thought to have come from a Snake or something and got on to the stuff that the person was wild foraging.

This has taught me two things:

1. I’m never going wild foraging

2. I’m never visiting Australia, although I wasn’t anyway because of the large spiders.

I already cross my fingers when I eat Pork because you hear about parasites in Pork! And Salmon (albeit I don’t eat Salmon).

Scary stuff!!

I used to travel to India for work a few times a year and then travel on to Singapore before returning to the UK. Always travelled with a group of five or six each time and at least one person each year would suffer from parasitic intestinal worms. We usually knew which person had worms when they would spend the entire flight in the loo on the plane from India to Singapore. I was fortunate to never have suffered from parasitic intestinal worms but for those that did, it was great for weight loss. I have suffered from Montezuma's revenge at least 3 times on visits to Mexico city.

The UK has a large number of parasites Tom- although they can mainly be found in SW1, they do infect the majority of the population- vicious, poisonous buggers

So these worm parasites can be passed on by snakes. Very very interesting

First time a worm has been found in the brain in a country on the other side of the world to me. I'm 1 in 7.8billion people on the planet. On my list of "things thats likely to stop me enjoying this cup of tea", I'd put this one well down below lightning strikes etc.

Reading through some of Tom's threads, I think he's mistaken Fab for Facebook and reminds me of the old man Simpsons character who's scared of the world.
