Deepest darkest Peru

Lovely folk of the lounge I need your useful tips and advice

I’m currently on holiday and the local mosquitos are using me like an all inclusive buffet

I’ve got plugs in my rooms, citronella spray on my body and a candle on the patio, Avon skin so soft oil (I was told that was good), mosquito bracelets on my wrists and ankles and aside from wrapping myself in bandages like a mummy I’m not sure what else may be helpful. I’m going to be coming home like a giant dot to dot!

All advice and tips welcome

No but then I’d be hovering about which is probably worse.

Skin So Soft works against Scottish midgies, I’m not convinced it’s any good against mosquitoes in other locales.

I usually find the best thing is to go to a local pharmacist wherever you are and ask them what works - because different products work in different places on different insects.

I’ve got some herbal stuff I picked up in the North of France that worked brilliantly there and does fuck all now I’m back home - the Scottish midgies aren’t put off by it at all.

I’ve just bought some extra potent repellent from the pharmacy so I’m seeing how this goes

When I was in Italy in July I hardly got bitten at all

You need something with a high DEET content to spray or roll on your skin.

I tried loads of stuff and kept getting bitten, in the end I stopped using it all and didn't get bitten anymore.

It baffled me but it worked.

Ohhh that’s a shame. Nothing else but high Deet content works for me. Avon skin so soft does nothing. Fingers crossed you find something.

I have one of those big blue zappers you usually see in catering businesses. The pops and bangs of the perishers meeting their end before sinking their blood sucking proboscis into my skin is very satisfying.

It has also proven to be a nuclear solution to a recent invasion of angry wasps into my inner sanctum. The heavy scent of roasted angry wasp is small price to pay to avoid the sting of their evicted fury.

Do what you can to keep them out, but take them out should they get in.

I saw calypso deet free spray but I don’t know if any good. Saw it in a shop called Bodycare. Not sure where else sells it.

OP, in reality nothing works! Everybody gets bitten, it’s your individual body reaction that makes the difference!

Deet is the active compound in most of the decent repellent sprays, use that before you go outside especially in the evening.

Problem is, it smells unpleasant and tastes worse so you have to wash it off before any bodily contact unless you’re both using it.

Good antihistamines work, take them for the duration of your holiday and afterwards and before your next holiday.

Candles and plug in repellents only stop them flying around your immediate space and even then some variants of mozzie don’t care!

Personally I was plagued when relocating to Asia but now they don’t bother me even when bitten; my body doesn’t react to them anymore!

I know it sounds boring and not what you want in holiday. But first thing in the morning and just as it’s starting to get dark. Keep covered up.

Generally if bites are above the knee they’re mosi bites. Below the knee while out they’re sandfly

100% deet is a killer! Literally they land on you they die. So they tend to stay away.

It’s not kind to them or your clothes though

So be careful

Enjoy the holiday

Agree about the sandfly, they had a good munch on my lower legs in Australia about 25 years ago. It wasn’t pleasant. Yet the next time I went, no bites.

Thanks for the advice everyone

We are next to a big nature reserve so I don’t think that’s helping, strangely enough the three kids don’t have a bite between them

Having been eaten alive in some godawful places on this planet there’s no lemon scented, skin softening body friendly solutions… and some people just get bitten more than others.

At night to sleep / read in bed…. mosquito nets. Burning mosquito coils and citronella candles don’t do a thing.

During the day and especially early evening, cover up as much as possible (clothing impregnated with repellent helps) and then whatever is left exposed apply 100% DEET. The watered-down ‘jungle formula’ is a joke to the little bastards.

As a warning though, DEET dissolved a G shock watch strap in under a week
