I gave up sugar about 10 days ago and whilst I’m not actually craving sweet stuff I have felt fluey for the last week. I didn’t put the two together (I actually thought maybe Covid) but just read you can have adverse reactions when you cut out sugar. Anyone else had this?

I've not taken sugar as an additive for 20 years and no side effects, sugar is in many food products though

But when you first gave up sugar did you have any withdrawal symptoms?

No but i have a good immune system, some people like a sugar rush mind guess if you've overdosed on it for sometime then maybe thats the problem but I've never had a taste for sweet things really i don't eat cake or confectionary

"But when you first gave up sugar did you have any withdrawal symptoms?"

You usually cut down on anything you're looking to cut out before cutting it completely, that way you get used to not having it. I don't remember any flu symptoms when I cut sugar, though as above, it's in nearly every product you buy so without realising you'll have intake. Don't worry if you eat the wrong things on a weekly basis, main thing is longevity

When you say sugar do you mean the white granules thing or all the sugars, including those found in almost every product imaginable?

I’ve cut out sweet snacks, additional sugar in drinks, simple carbs which often full of sugar ect

We've done this a few times over the years, and always get flu-like symptoms on the short term - keto flu. It will pass if you stick with it.

Can you remember how long it lasted on average?

Good for you. I’d call it you cut on sugar rather than sugar detox as you still consume sugar in other forms, eg. fruits, most vegetables, milk or bread and other things.

There is a thing called keto flu when your body goes into state of ketosis but it’s more likely when you cut down your carbohydrates intake under 50g a day, or even 20g.

Not sure this is the case here but still possible as withdrawal effect if you were consuming lots of sugary foods before.

Anyway good luck!

I have actually cut down on simple carbs as well and not fruit for two weeks

Not me personally but I had a friend who consumed multiple bottles of lucozade a day and when she stopped she had headaches for a while.

I’m 7 weeks into a sugar detox which I do every year …

After the 1st 2 weeks cravings are gone and it’s all about discipline

I did low carbs a few years back and felt like shit for 2 weeks until my body adjusted. It wasn’t sustainable because it’s impossible to have a social life and not have any carbs.

Same. After I was diagnosed, I cut out all "sweet foods" but had no side effects. Maybe because I never had a really sweet tooth. My problem is the sugar in dairy and carbs. If I don't crunch the numbers properly, I can end up feeling really unwell. I'm sure I'll master it one day lol!
