Yes - love it - am on chess.com - great for online real-time play and puzzles -just got slaughtered also watch Gotham chess on YouTube / great videos and tactics - enjoy learning and playing.

Amazingly, there are even more possible variations of chess games than there are atoms in the observable universe.

Been watching some Gotham on YouTube. Figured I would learn the basics then try some chess.com but then realised how much there is to learn and got a bit overwhelmed with it all so now just play the Dr. Wolf app lessons. He says encouraging things like "as your tutor it's not my role to crush you" when you play a bad move...

Agree the Queens Gambit was very good - loved the historic details (clothing / music / cars / architecture) albeit very loosely based on Bobby Fischer - I had thought there was a real Beth Harmon!

Yes - am a platinum member (only for the reviews of the games which is extremely helpful - need to explore the other options available). Was hovering at the 1050 mark but have dropped to 920 mark as not been playing regularly. The brain needs to see the patterns as I haven’t really read the theory. Nor can I remember systematic openings! Lost 9 of last 10 games!!! Very annoyed.

Used to play a lot at school and uni. 30 years later bought a really cool set at a second hand shop. That sparked my interest again so started online. Though I remembered all the rules the structure of my game had totally gone. Also I think I prefer face to face playing. Looked online for local chess clubs but looks like they are a thing of the past.

Chess has always fascinated me for some reason, so many different strategies and outcomes which are determined either through planning or at random..

One or a number off moves can be the difference between victory or defeat, depending on one’s mindset or ability to correctly predict ahead a move which will lead to a check mate..

I have played it from time to time on the board game or online….and I have never seemed to have succeeded in winning a game off chess, maybe one day who knows?

Bit like a dog chasing a car the thrill off catching it is quite exhilarating but it never does and even it does manage to one day succeed in catching the car it has no idea what to do with it?

I have found that the more you play, the more you see stratagems but to really progress, it’s more than the odd game. It is actually to understand / remember openings - or at least some of the principles. That’s been my stumbling block - can’t remember all the lines…. If you want to remember just a few - google the Fried Liver attack (YouTube best) and the counter to that is the Traxler counter gambit. The other one is the Stafford Gambit.

Both are good to know.

Hope you do carry on playing as it is rewarding when you can see your tactics paying off.

This is special. And why I stay on these forums. Life is often not seeing what's right in front of us. Or it was just a fun game where you nearly won. You can take your meaning depending on what mood you're in.

"I just started learning chess, any of you lot play?"

Yeah, I play.

I saw your chess[dot]com mention. Did you know that if you "Play against the computer" you can select beginner bots as your opponent.

Also, maybe start with a focus on one opening (e.g. the Scotch Game)? Ultimately, you don't want to limit yourself like that, but it can be a useful way to work on strategy, tactics, learn traps, etc.

The site pairs you up with players of a similar rank, so you shouldn't play against players much better, or much worse than you.

Am hovering 930 now…. But not getting a fair go. Think it must be lack of opening awareness as I tend to get flummoxed at the start some games. And run out of time! Am playing 10min games as I just can’t deal with time pressures on anything quicker. Still enjoy the adrenaline rush

I play against the computer these days as hardly anybody I know either knows how to play or will actually play against me. I have a separate electronic set but the whole pushing the piece down with the right pressure so the thing knows what move has been made gets annoying. I should probably buy a new one as it's nearly 20 year's old anyway.

I think the whole "3D" aspect gets lost with a computer even if it's virtual 3D.

You should chess dot com. Its free, and your matched with people of similar skill. And you determine you play a 15 minute game or a 30 minute game. I think you can even play shorter games if you want. Its very addictive.

Don't play much anymore as I don't have any friends who play. I used to live in a small mountain village where we would often play it in the pubs. Many an epic bout of d*unken or 'stoner' chess was played in the "Duck and Trout" or the "Anglers Tavern" with epic pawn charges were made to the cheers and delight of the crowd.

Love playing chess ... when I'm playing cheas I cant think of anything else but the game or I'd lose, I find it very therapeutic. My favourite opening is the Hippo 😅 and recently treated myself to a new board which the pieces move on their own a bit like Harry Potter Wizards Chess ... if anyone fancies a giggle should look up Chess Boxing ... not strip chess but still funny when these smart grandmasters of the game have a go at each other in the ring in between moves on the board 🤣🤣🤣

Play 2 or 3 times a day on chess. Com. Was hovering around the 1020 mark for a while but had a terrible run lately. Seems like it goes through phases where looking at the reviews you get paired with other 900-1100 that for a week or 2 seem to play 1600+ rating games. Wonder if it's new cheat methods come around then they stamp it out than a few months later there's another one. I played 2 900 players last week whose games rated 2000+

I agree nothing makes me focus more than chess where not much else does in this day and age.

I'm a Queens Gambit and Caro Kann player myself.

I loved watching Andrea Botez do chess boxing that's for sure!

Strip chess sounds fun but chess in itself is pretty kinky. The goal is to mate your opponent. The best players are called "Masters". During the game you might be pinned and forked and end up sliding into their back rank! It's also preferred to play with a bishop pair

Keep going. If they're cheating you'll get a rating refund when their account gets banned. Remember for every good player you get there's an equally terrible player. Just luck of the draw!
