No I haven't and it does sound apocryphal although I have it on good authority from some old timers that it did happen.. along with Pampas grass outside the House, and contact mags pre internet (yes there really was a time when swingers used to write to each other

I can imagine someone hosting this as a retro swinging night. Just as a giggle, without the pressure of ‘you must fuck the people you pick’. Y’know, do a whole theme night. Late ’70s outfits. Appropriate tunes. Retro party snacks. Some would definitely end up in bed together anyway …

I think it would be amazing fun, if it was run in a private hotel, the bowl was full of keycards, and all the women were sat in the rooms waiting, so the men chose a key card and went off to find the room……..?

Imagine; two bowls with assorted keycards in. So the ladies choose their card first, then off they go with their overnight bag. Half an hour later, the guys choose a card, then pick their overnight bag up and go off to find their room, and whoever they are spending the night with…..

My parents, it turns out, did actually have 'keys-in-a-bowl' swingers parties back in the 70s. Them and four other couples would take turns to host once a month, plus invite the odd single F or M to spice it up. Oh, and all four couples had pampas grass in their front garden. Not that I knew what it meant back then

My ex female partner told me she was invited to a sex party and your keys were randomly placed in the doorway of a partygoer of the opposite sex, so you didnt see who you were getting together with beforehand . Don't know if l would like that ,l never asked what the guy was like ,too much information.

Keys in a bowl with an agreement that anyone who deems themselves not compatible takes themselves off for drinks, chatter and banter and enjoys that instead. Just make keys in a bowl a portion of the night and then anyone incompatible has a chance to find their perfect match later.

A good many years back we were invited to a party which was run on a variation of this. There was a draw with numbers on paper tickets, where a partner was established and a then a second draw for a room in the house (all of which had been numbered). After there was a second round and so more variation still. It turned out to be one of the most sociable and enjoyable nights we ever had in the swinging world. I can imagine that potentially there could be some downsides to doing anything like this, but with a bit of careful planning and selection of the right sort of folks (real swingers) it has great potential even now. Clean, pleasant, unpretentious and keen folks are all that’s needed; but they are a very rare commodity now; so probably not the sort of thing that would be easy to find on fab nowadays.

These parties were my introduction to what is now known as swinging way back in the early 1960's, they were arranged at the local pub, no internet or mobile phones in those days, three or four couples all known to each other would be the norm for a party.

If you had the misfortune to pick your own keys you were given a second chance.

Alcohol played a big part in the success of these parties, no breathalysers in those days,

The parties which I organised usually took place at my parents house when they were on holiday and this was the case with many other parties.

Happy days, wish I could put the clock back 50+ years.

Remember those parties well from the 70s/80s! Strangely everyone there was fairly good looking and very sexy and the atmosphere was electric lol. So you didn't really end up shagging someone you weren't attracted to!

It’s a game, the idea of any game is a risk to loose to make win sweeter.

The win in the game of bowl keys is to get the most desirable partner at the desk. If you don’t - you lost. Doesn’t mean you need to shag just because you pull the key. It is explained at the very beginning of the game.

There's a Spanish drama series on Amazon that i saw recently and really enjoyed called "El Juego De Las Llaves", "The game of keys", about a group of friends who decide to do this (now instead of in the 70s). They got two seasons out of it, it's got some good characters

Yes it used to at parties I went to when younger. It was a lot of fun but a bit hit and miss if you got on with person. Not sure I would do now as like to chat first and make sure all want to take further. However be happy to get an invite and see and risk it
