Almost fake profiles

Why do some people upload fake pictures on their profile? I've had an awkward experience where this person has uploaded pictures of other people. This person looked nothing like it. And confessed at the last minute of the meet. I felt so stupid of myself. I wonder if the verifications are genuine.

I can usually spot a fake from a mile away but if I am ever unsure I ask for a video of the person in question saying or doing something specific to prove they are real

As for why people do it, not an expert but I am guessing it is something to do with low self esteem.

Maybe just be more vigilant when deciding who you meet, maybe ask politely for a video chat that way you get to see each other prior to the meet, I was asked this previously before a social and it was useful to get rid of any doubts and also good regards to getting that initial feel for conversation. It’s something I’d definitely do in the future
