Is the ability to communicate via actually speaking to someone becoming a lost art?

I work in a customer facing role and when I turn up for appointments I can barely get a sentence out of people but they will quite happily text me a whole essay with questions about their animals!

Maybe for younger generations? I grew up without Internet and I don't think it can replace real interactions!
