I don't really get what the differences are. My dads family were loaded but they worked, my mums family were squashed into a Glasgow tenement and they worked.

I remember my dad watching the news and always bemoaning the 'working classes' and my mum always telling him off cos he WAS working class lol!

I thought my dad was funny, he refused to wear a 'flat cap' cos that was workin' class lol! and if we ever had to stop the car to ask directons my mum would be mortified by the over the top 'posh' voice my dad put on for strangers.

My Dad was an engineer and my Mum tested water cysterns in a factory. I;m working class and proud.

As with others folks i'm not quite sure what i'd be classed as. Born to working class 1st generation asian parents, raised on an ex-council estate, degree educated and looking to pursue doctorate, holding a decent job with fairly well off people as colleagues (im the commoner apparently), so not sure if im still working class or middle class but you can decide by the class measuring stick

I was called posh once by a lass from Dudley cause i'd lost my black country accent, not sure if that counts

The standard definition always was...

If you work, it doesn't matter what at, you are working class.

If you owned something that had workers working for you, small factory, a medium shop, a hotel, or owner of a solicitors, and did not yourself actually have to work, you were middle class.

If you owned enough land that you did not know how many tenants you had or who they were, you were upper class.

Bottom line, if you are going into 2013 and owe any person or any institution any money of any kind at all, you are beneath the class system (yeomanry) entirely, and are in fact no more than an indentured servant.

Im happy with myself no matter what im classed as, my parents were lower than lower class, my dad was an abusive alcoholic and i spend most of childhood being pushed round the system from one care home and family to another, i went to collage, uni and worked hard all my life to make sure my children didnt have the childhood i had so even if im working class im proud to be so as i dont think ive made bad of my life looking at where i came from

I have worked all my life but would not say I am working or any other class. I am just me...

I do like people to have manners, be able to hold a conversation and to have a sense of humour... those qualities are in my experience not linked to any particular class

So, two peopl sit next to each other in work, they both do the same job..but one was raised on a council estate, the other on a private estate...

Which one is 'working class' ???

I once went out with a woman who spoke fondly of her 'working class' colleagues..even though she did the same job as them she considered herself 'middle class'...what a load of bollocks!

Why put yourself on a higher level than someone else in a situation like that??..why?, because you want to feel superior to other people maybe?

I know people who consider themselves to have 'middle class values' but are real snides when it comes down to it..and others who for some strange reason consider themselves 'working class' and are the salt of the earth...

I do what some clowns might consider a 'middle class' job..but I refuse to be put in a box..I am working class, I am of a class of people who work...like most of us.

I detest people who consider themselves 'better' than others by classing themselves a grade higher...conversely, I am puzzled by those who consider themselves as 'only working class' as if its some sort category at the bottom of the pecking order.

You either work, or you dont.

I'd rather be posh than be a snob. You find snobs tend to be rude, arrogant and turn their nose up at those less privilege than them. They forget where they came from.

I come from a working class background. I've done well for myself and earn very good money but my feet are firmly stuck to the ground and still see myself as an east end boy and class myself as working class.

I don't see the connection between someone being posh and an accusation its a descriptive word that has been used for decades if not centuries. I would describe myself as affluent and educated but far from posh and haven't been tagged that way. Saying that I have friends I would describe as posh or from a privileged background who have family money but little personal wealth who are described as posh and I don't really see it as an accusation or anything negative just a way of describing them and their background the same as someone who is working class.

I can see where you are coming from. It is just that in my experience (I have been labelled posh on many occasions) it has always "sounded" like a negative attribute - for one I cannot help the fact my parents chose a grammar school for me, that the almost natural progression from there was uni etc. I do feel I have had a priviledged upbringing (and I am grateful for that and it is one of the reasons I am trying to give something back to society). I just feel a bit uncomfortable when people call me "posh".

I agree it used to. Unfortunately theres a form of reverse snobbery in existence now. Earn a good living and do well in life...which lets face it isn't a bad thing to do and people who are struggling label you sometimes.

Posh has nothing to do with work and besides what's so awful about it ? Embrace diversity, it makes life a spicier experience

I once went out with a woman who spoke fondly of her 'working class' colleagues..even though she did the same job as them she considered herself 'middle class'...what a load of bollocks!

Why put yourself on a higher level than someone else in a situation like that??..why?, because you want to feel superior to other people maybe?

I know people who consider themselves to have 'middle class values' but are real snides when it comes down to it..and others who for some strange reason consider themselves 'working class' and are the salt of the earth...

I do what some clowns might consider a 'middle class' job..but I refuse to be put in a box..I am working class, I am of a class of people who work...like most of us.

I detest people who consider themselves 'better' than others by classing themselves a grade higher...conversely, I am puzzled by those who consider themselves as 'only working class' as if its some sort category at the bottom of the pecking order.

Too right. It's all defined by sociologists (like my brother), and how they want to put you in a box according to THEIR rules. I make my own.
